Great books for 10 year old boys

Recommended Posts

If you're like me, you sometimes find it difficult to find good books that your 10 year old DS will want to read (or listen to). I came across two recently that are terrific: Avi's Poppy and Night Journey and a great Swedish author, Karin Anckarsvard's Doctor's Boy. I had to interlibrary loan the last one but it was so worth it. She's written some others and I will try to get those as well. Her prose is simple enough to understand yet sprinkled with advanced vocabulary. The characters are well developed and the story stresses moral growth but not in a preachy way. The main character is very realistic and likeable.

If you haven't already, The Swiss Family Robinson by Johan Wyss is an excellent read (or read aloud for the slightly younger, my 7 and 9 year old sons love it) for boys this age, and it's a wonderful classic. The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island, Peter Pan, Tom Sawyer/Huck Fin, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Call of the Wild, and anything by Jules Vern are all popular at our house (or were popular with my younger brothers when we were kids.)

Really it depends on their personal interests though. Some kids really enjoy books that are series and others like books that stand alone. My oldest is going through a phase where he wants to read about anything to do with the military, last year though it was farm machinery, sharks and poisonous snakes. Non-fiction may also appeal to many boys. The important thing is encouraging a love of books and desire to read, whatever the topic.

My son has absolutely loved The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander. He read all 5 of them in a week, and every day he wanted to share everything with me. He beamed as he spoke about them.

Prior to that he read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and loved it.

I was just pulling out Avi books today, but he chose The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg which is about a boy living during the Civil War. I'm interested to hear what he says.
