KatieJ
My DiL with a brand spanking new baby thinks I can create anything with my sewing machine. I like patterns. (That's why I cringe when the word seamstress is used to describe myself as I think I should be able to do this.) Anyone have tried and true patterns they love? Ideas for modifying t shirt patterns that work? Or a place to buy affordable nursing tops. thanks!
trinchick
My suggestion would be to forgo the nursing wardrobe entirely and just buy a bunch of nursing tanks to wear under regular shirts. They sell them at Target very reasonably. I always just pulled my shirt up; the drape of the shirt covered my breast, and the tank made sure that my (wiggly) belly was well covered. I considered myself a very modest nurser, and this worked great for me.

ThursdayNext
I second the nursing tank tops, and regular shirts loose enough to pull up. With my button-up shirts, I often wear a pashmina shawl for cover up. I get the cheap nursing tanks from Target, and there are some nicer more expensive options out there too. I've had some nursing shirts passed down to me, but it's not worth the hassle.
HelenNotOfTroy
or try these http://undercovermama.com/, they attach to the nursing bra.
KatieJ
She has nursing tanks but is looking at nursing tshirts. http://sewing.patternreview.com/patterns/50425#.UScKoly9LCQ and I found this one http://www.nearseanaturals.com/item.php?id=2358 I sew knit all the time and I do these. I am not fond of printing out patterns tho. Boobdesign has adorable t shirts, but the cost is rediculous! http://shop.boobdesign.com/en/4/nursing-wear
dirty ethel rackham
Like the others said, nursing camis can be a godsend. However, there have been times where a dress would be a good option - especially for a wedding or dressy occasion (and would also help disguise the post-pregnancy bump.) Here are some commercially available dresses that might provide some inspiration: This dress looks nice and can be worn with a jacket. But, Motherhood always had nursing openings that were up too high - made for shorter people or more pert booKs. Here are some cute dresses. Here is a free dress pattern. And here is the tutorial for that same dress. Here are some patterns.
Orthodox6
For special occasions, perhaps she would like a nursing dress from this very fine company: http://liliesapparel.com/
momofkhm
Target didn't have nursing tanks when I was at that stage. (Youngest now 12.) I used Elizabeth Lee Designs. I must have made lots of the t-shirt style. I know I didn't do a swim suit. I think I made a dress once but didn't like the blousy-ness of it once I started losing the extra belly. http://www.elizabethlee.com/
trinchick
Yes, I agree with the suggestion of a dress, especially with Easter coming up. Even though I excused myself to another room to nurse during family get-togethers, it was very cumbersome/inconvenient to hoist up a dress to feed the baby. lavender's green
If you're looking into dresses, I really like wrap-style ones. Just pull down the fabric and you're good to go!

I got on board with nursing dresses when I went to a family wedding when my first child was a baby. I wore a sheath-styled dress so I had to go to the bathroom, and practically disrobe to nurse my son. My dress fell into the toilet. :banghead: I had to ask someone to get my SIL so she could take my dress and dry it under the hand dryers while I stood in the stall in my underwear holding my son. After that, I bought a nursing dress for special occasions.

KatieJ
She NEVER wears dresses. She wore one at her wedding, but wore slacks to my other son's wedding. Just looking for some t shirt casual shirt ideas. (SHe dresses casaully for church too.) Thanks for all the ideas. I am looking Jalie patterns and the Elizabeth Lee ones too. dirty ethel rackham
Has Elizabeth Lee come out with any newer patterns since the early 90's? Everything I saw out there looked like stuff I wore back when my oldest was born. If you find patterns for mock-wrap tops, you can easily add a privacy panel underneath. Under their newest patters they show a slip, a dress, and a child's pattern. The rest do seem dated. However, if she wants some kind of blouse for a dressier occasion, this is where I will look. Jalie seem more current.
macmacmoo
This site has some nursing patterns. http://diymaternity.com there's a link to Megan niesen's pattern line on there as well that has some nice things. Never had time to sew any nursing tops though. Living in nursing tanks and "normal" tops that have a bit if a stretch and a v neckline that I can pull open.
