Ottakee
We are looking a taking a road trip our west. Our daughter wants to ride a MULE on a trail ride or something similar (more than just a circle in an arena type thing). Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Looking for something reputable with well trained and well cared for animals and knowledgable staff.
Dandelion
This looks pretty cool: http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/mule-trips-716.html
RebeccaS
The first thing that came to mind was the Grand Canyon. lol! Just a touch too slow to beat Dandelion. ;)
planner
I'll second the Grand Canyon.
Cinder
Third for Grand Canyon. Actually we didn't ride the mules while there but we did run into them a couple times and they seemed well cared for. One of the guys was taking a bunch of them on a hike; it was early in the season and I don't think they'd been out much. He was very good about informing us how to behave while they passed by and seemed calm with the animals. I know these were just small glimpses but I got a good impression from it. Jane in NC
And now for a negative on the Grand Canyon mule ride. Note: we did not do this. We chose to hike to the floor of the canyon on a trail not used by the mule riders. Our preference had been to hike all along but a conversation with some lodge employees clued us into the discomfort that mule riders face unless they regularly ride horses. I believe this is the case for the OP but for others reading the thread, a non-rider is in for a day of potential misery. The ride is four or six hours long. Apparently there are some very sore people who slide off the mules at the end of trip. Just a warning...

It was great, though! Well, great and pretty scary in some places. There are places where your outside foot is hanging out over nothing at all for a very very long way down. If you don't like heights, don't do it. If you need a bathroom every half hour, don't do it. If you don't trust animals, don't do it. But otherwise, it is an amazing way to see the Grand Canyon. And Bryce. Nan
Ottakee
I don't think we would want the ride down the Grand Canyon. I am thinking more of a trail ride with NO drop offs, etc. 17dd is cognitively impaired and while she can tack up her own horse and ride here I don't think she would do the heights, etc.

Nan I believe you that it was amazing, but my goodness, that sounds horrible to me. Hanging over nothing? Yikes! We are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon and had decided against doing the mule ride. Now I feel sure that is the right decision for us. TravelingChris
I went on a mule ride at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. It was much shorter than the Grand Canyon trips and also not as scary but still very beautiful.
