HOD Little Hearts or Sonlight Core A

Both! HOD is my favorite as a whole program, but the books in core A are invaluable for this age. It's easy to supplement. We just read the books from sonlight and talk about them. Occasionally, we did a lapbook and I almost always found free online comprehension questions for most books. There are also supplemental books recommended in HOD appendix that my dc enjoyed.

I like the idea of doing both, but I am already planning to use Memoria Press grade one (minus the literature and enrichment) with my first grade dd next year. I wanted to add history, science and Bible from another source. I need to choose between HOD and Sonlight due to the time constraints of meeting the needs of four children.

I've done Little Hearts but not Sonlight core A (many of the books are familiar to us, though). If it was my choice, I'd choose core A. HOD is awesome as a whole program but that's not what you're going for and I wouldn't choose Little Hearts (specifically) just for history, science and Bible. At that level the focus (and value) of the guide is far more on skills and you have those covered already.

I agree with SCGS. Most of the HOD lessons are math, reading, and writing...and I'm not a big fan of HOD's history/science at the earlier levels. They are a bit textbook-y. I haven't used Sonlight, but it seems like it would be a better fit for your needs than HOD.

Have you considered FIAR? I think it's great for those ages if you want a bit more structure.

We've used both as well as Memoria Press and if I had to choose one I'd choose SL for your needs. HOD is great for skill building and when used as a whole, but if you just want history, science, and bible, I'd go with Core A. Reading the Egermeier bible in Core A was really meaningful for us. Core A also has a lot more literature than LHFHG, which has mostly the Thorton Burgess books. Are you wanting hands-on, though? If you are, I'd go with LHFHG. I found it hard to add hands-on to Core A.

It is so funny how my mind can change so quickly when looking at homeschool curriculum. Last week, I was planning to use MP Grade 1 and add on Sonlight A for the literature and Bible. However, in another post, someone had mentioned loving MP K (which we are doing now and love), but 1st grade MP being a bust for them. One problem that was mentioned a couple of times was the reading level of Storytime Treasures books. These books are their readers, but do not coincide with what they have learned in phonics. This has scared me away a little. So, now I am looking at finding a full program. With this being said, what would be everyone's suggestions. Would you use HOD Little Hearts or Sonlight Core A. I also felt that the read alouds may not be enough in Little Hearts for my first grader, but I thought that would be easy to supplement.

I had LHFHG for kinder and sold it. I'm using sonlight p45 now and have core a ready to go for first grade.

Hod is babyish and too textbooky for my taste. You also loose freedom bc the guide is very "bossy" with the layout. It didn't fit our style.

I have nixed sonlight's bible portion for something else and will not use their LA.
