I guess my specific questions are what is the recovery from surgery like. Did you have to have a second surgery? Did it affect your hearing long term? After recovery and for the long term have you had any lingering effects from it? I am almost positive I will be having surgery.

Thanks!

I also had a mastoidectomy in the same ear. I have about 40-50% hearing in my left ear. You have to remember though that I was 6 & 7 years old when I had surgery. I don't know what it's like to hear fully. I go every couple of years to get my ear cleaned out. I was out of school for a couple of weeks. One surgery took 2 1/2 hours the other over 5 hours. I think it will depend on your specific situation as far as outcome and how long it takes. It's been over 30 years since I had surgery! Technology has changed so much. I will be thinking of you!

My older DD had a cholesteatoma, and I was also an audiologist for a large ENT practice in my prior life :)

A lot will depend on how big the cholesteatoma is, how invasive, etc. my biggest advice is that obviously not all ENTs are created equal. REALLY do your homework. Finding an otologist (ears only) is one way to help narrow down to someone that knows what they are doing.
