Catwoman
If you have purchased organic spinach recently, check the packaging. Taylor Farms Retail is participating in a voluntary recall across 39 states due to an E. coli scare. Here are the details: http://spinachmarketwithdrawal.com/index.php
Mom2pandc
I just used the rest of our spinach up in lasagna yesterday. I'm not even going to dig the package out of the trash. Although I'm pretty certain that was the brand. I'm going to just rest assured I cooked it and killed the germs. :p
Cinder
Thanks for the note. I have Simple Truth in the fridge now but we're not in any of the states listed. Hopefully we're ok. We've already eaten some of it without bad effects so I guess we are ok.
nmoira
Phew, the tub I just purchased is a different brand than the ones listed.
MomatHWTK
Thank you so much for posting. I had the spinach and mixed greens (with spinach) both in my 'fridge! Out they go, not worth taking the chance. I told DH we're going to have to grow our own. :glare:
chickenpatty
We have it in our fridge, but have eaten over half of it with no ill effects. Should I still throw it out??
MomatHWTK
I threw ours out because it is usually not every leaf in a batch that is contaminated. It was triple washed at the facility but if enough made it through that process to trigger a recall, then it is possible that one of the leaves ended up in my package. I really, really have been enjoying eating a salad daily without the trouble of cleaning fresh stuff myself, so it was hard to throw it out. I know there are alternatives, but the pre-packaged stuff was very convenient.
DianeW88
The problem with spinach (and some other produce) is that e coli cannot be washed out of it. It is in the soil and get inside of the leaves. You can cook it properly to reduce your risk, but that would mean cooking it in something like lasagna, so that it is happily boiling away for a sustained period of time at a high temperature (such as baking at 350 for 40 minutes). Stir-frying it, or lightly cooking it with scrambled eggs isn't enough to kill e coli. Best bet is to throw out all fresh spinach.
