Mom0012
Any thoughts on these? I want to do something different with my dd next year. She is not interested in horses, so we wouldn't do that program with either of these companies, but one of their other ones. Also looking at Hakim's Story of Science or BF's music program instead of science. My dd plays piano and is starting to get pretty good, so I thought the music program might be a cool alternate to science for one year. I want something high interest and enjoyable. This is for 6th grade. TIA!
dbmamaz
We read Story of Science in 9th grade, 2 and a half books of it - we didnt get the extensions, which some people like and some dont. Story of Science is interesting because its in historical order and includes biographies of the scientists, but also explains the science on a conceptual level. Book 3 is way too complex for middle school though.
Chrysalis Academy
We're enjoying Story of Science/Aristotle right now, and we'll do Newton also. We'll either skip Einstein or wait and do it along with Conceputal Physics in 9th grade- I agree it is above middle-school heads (and mine, too, for that matter). We like the Quest Guide for Aristotle. We've been doing SOS 3 times a week, Entomology once a week and Equine Science once a week (both at dd's request). We're going to take a break from it this spring to do Botany, and then get back to it in the fall. I think 6th grade is perfect for Story of Science (at least the first book, maybe the first two). Ok, so it sounds like my dd could do the first SOS book and also have time for the BF music program? Where did you get the Quest guide and what kinds of things does it include? Are there any experiments to be done in SOS or the Quest guide? Thx!
Mom0012
The main program we were interested in from WP was the environmental one. I'll have to look up the name of it. Any comments on that? Thx! ETA: It is called SLimy, Grimy & Scummy no more -- it's conservation science, which I know the kids in PS get a ton of, but we haven't had any. There is a Teacher's guide, and a Student guide. There are lots of activities, rather than experiements per se, in the first book, although there are some experiments. The first book is a lot of history of science, before it's really "Science" with the experimental method as we know it today. But there are math and measurement activities, and optional writing activities, and questions to answer. It does deepen and extend the readings, I would feel like just reading the book alone wouldn't quite measure up as a science class, unless you added activities from another source, and if you are going to go to that trouble, why not just get the Quest Guide? I think that Quark from this board, and The Amazing Miss Moe have both reviewed the Quest guides really thoroughly on their blogs, you might try a a search, I don't have time to look for the posts this morning but could try later today. And yes, you can do the first book in a year, 2-3 days a week, and do something else, too.

You are making me question my vow not to order from WP again, after the fiasco in receiving Equine Science, but this might be worth it for next year! Mom0012
Thanks, Rose! I haven't decided what I'm going to use yet, but you've given me some things to think about.
