jkeys
Hi, curious if anyone has a preferred early math resource for K age children? Would love to hear any reviews or ideas, or any cirriculum you've put together on your own! Thanks in advance for replies : )
blondchen
I have no experience with anything else, but we are loving Right Start Level A. I can tell that DD is not naturally wired to be the stereotypical "math person" (she is more of a free spirit/artistic type) but she loves doing math because RS is very hands-on and it's fun (with very little written work at this stage). Not that all learning has to be fun, but this curriculum is. The spiral approach has worked very well for my DD so far. I wish I had learned math this way, and I find myself looking forward to her math lessons myself! I've also heard that Right Start Level B is a favorite for a lot of people, and I guess next year I'll find out why. :-)
Aspasia
We really liked Singapore Essential Math. Inexpensive, thorough, and appealing to my dd.
ByGrace3
We really liked RS A for K. Ds finished it up in January and is now working through MM 1.
joyfulmomSDG
We really liked Singapore Essential Math. Inexpensive, thorough, and appealing to my dd. :iagree: This has been the best resource we have used as a first "official" math. We moved through the 2 Singapore Essential books then continued into Horizons K.
mamamindy
I really liked MEP Reception for K math. It is gentle, fun, and you spend some time really seeing them think through math concepts. We just used that along with playing with c-rods and education unboxed videos. As a bonus, MEP and the ed unboxed vids are free! :)
three4me
We really liked Singapore Essential Math. Inexpensive, thorough, and appealing to my dd. We started Essential Math B when DD was 4.25. A would have been much too easy. We're mid-way through B now and just love the simplicity of it. We plan to go on to Standards 1A when she finishes with this, which will technically be her K year. Holly
I haven't found a K program I really liked. We use 1st grade materials and go at a slower pace. For K this year, we are using Miquon's Orange book (with lots of C-rod games added in).
Five More Minutes
Another Essential Math recommendation here. We used it with c-rods (and also did Miquon some of the time, 'cause we like math around here). Essential Math A is deceptively simple at first. Your student may be able to charge through pages without much effort, and you may wonder why anyone would recommend such fluff. Three things to remember: (1) actually doing the lessons printed at the bottom of the page (with c-rods whenever possible) makes it the program that it is; (2) some of the discussion questions on apparently very simple pages get the kids thinking about and observing concepts in a whole different way; and (3) it just plain gets harder by around the middle of A. Staceyshoe
We are using primarily Education Unboxed (link in my siggy) which is perfect for my visual learner. It's interactive and based on play. The only thing I needed to buy was c-rods. LOVE it! We are also working our way through Singapore Essentials, and I plan to add in some Miquon soon. I would consider Education Unboxed our primary method because those lessons just STICK like nothing else we do.
Ellesmere
Besides the good ideas already mentioned, here is a K math recommendation from the Math Mammoth site.
