For those of you who use Apologia science, I was wondering how you schedule your reading and notebooking. We are using Zoology 2 this year. We spend 2 weeks on a lesson, and then do the experiments. I prefer to do a little reading each day rather than in a couple huge chunks, so I was thinking of alternating a day of reading with a day of notebooking. Up until now we have been doing the reading the first week, and notebooking the next, but sometimes retention is poor when we wait to notebook the following week. What works for you? Do you do all the reading first, and then the notebooking? Or break it up with reading one day, notebooking the next? Or something else?

Thanks and Blessings!

We do reading and note booking together. So last week we read about squids, talked about what we read, and they each wrote a narration in their notebooks all on the same day. The next day we did octopuses, etc. As for experiments, if it looks like it might take a while, I give the experiment it's own day. If not, I tack it onto the end of our reading. Most of the "try this" activities don't take long so we do them when we come across them and keep going if there is time.

We are using Zoo 1 this year, we did Astronomy last year. We use the jr notebooking journal. We do the reading and notebooking at the same time. We read until we reach what feels like a natural stopping point and then complete any related notebooking pages. At the end of the chapter/lesson we do the mini books and any other notebooking pages we haven't done. We also use the lapbooks from AJTL, we pick a few for each chapter and glue them right into our notebooks. We generally do the project a separate day. We spend about a week to a week and a half per lesson, I'd say about 30 mins per day, 3-4 days a week. I don't follow a schedule, we just do as much as we can handle each day.

We do the reading and notebooking at the same time as well. My oldest does it on his own and I look it over afterwards. I read out loud to my youngest two and then sit with them as they notebook. It takes about 15-30 min depending on how enthusiastic they are that day. We have actually finished it all up in 10 min before. We will just read one small chunk at a time usually, unless we are wanting to take some extra time off on another day, then we'll read a bit more. We do it 4-5 times a week. Most times just 4 times a week as we like to be outside exploring on Fridays.

Thank you, Becky. So about how long each time and how many times a week are you spending on science?

We do science twice a week for about an hour a day. We read and then notebook, read and then notebook so it's not just an hour of reading. I also break up the time with documentaries on Netflix from time to time. We watched Colossal Squid the other day. Ds was so excited, lol.
