This year for 3rd grade I've used all Rod and Staff with my daughter. Next year I was planning to use Rod and Staff again and add Apologia for science and Prairie Primer as a fun study for us to do in the afternoons. I decided to use HOD LHTH for my youngest and started looking at the other age levels and really like HOD. However I don't want to give up the Apoloia science and using Prairie Primer for fun stuff. Would it be too much to add those with HOD or would it be doable?

I was also thinking long term and wondering if HOD would be meaty enough for higher grades. I know I want to use MOH in a few year and wondered how I could work that or if I should jut give up on HOD for grades after preschool.

For that age I would look at Preparing. It is an awesome guide. My ds and I are really enjoying it. You can add Apologia to HOD if you desire and have the time. My dh is going through the elementary series with my older two kids in the evening and they also do HOD science. As far as the Prairie Primer I have seen it and used it a little and I wasn't overly imoressed with it. If you really want to use it I think it would make a good Summer school type thing. You could do a couple of the books per summer for a few years. I own all of the HOD guides up to Preparing and fromwhat I have seen of the higher guides they arevery meaty. Also MOH and Apologia are both used some in the Hearts For Him Through Time guides. If you have any other specific questions I'm happy to answer. :)

I would check the placement chart to see whether they fit into Bigger or Preparing. I think that Bigger would go well with the Prairie Primer since they both cover American History especially western expansion. I have used Apologia science instead of some of the science that has been scheduled with the guides, no problema.

The upper guides are meaty, but only one uses MOH (CTC uses MOH3). I really liked and wanted to use MOH and my dd found CTC to be a bit overwhelming so we ended up not using HOD with her and MOH with Apologia instead.

Also, HOD schedules R&S English in their guides. You can easily use R&S Math too instead of SM.

I haven't used Prairie Primer, but I imagine it would have been too much for me to do along with HOD. I have never been able to use a unit study program alongside another full program...even if it's "for fun". However, there probably are moms who could carry this plan out...I'm not one of them. ;) I've tried repeatedly to use FIAR/BFIAR for my youngers and it just doesn't happen.

I could see substituting their science with Apologia...I think there are quite a few moms who do this (or use another science program).
