Mandylubug
We are flying out on March 1st and this is our first time visiting. We haven't decided on having a rental car or just using taxis. We know we want to kayak the bioluminscence pool (bay?) And hike to see waterfalls, etc. Any tips?
Jean in Newcastle
Are you talking about San Juan, Puerto Rico or the San Juan Islands in Washington state?
twinmami01
First, I am soooo jealous. My family is from Puerto Rico and I'm sad to say I haven't been since 1996! Definitely check out El Morro and El Junque Rainforest. Also, you may want to consider a rental car. The taxis are so expensive!
J-rap
My son is there right now! I know he's spending today in the bioluminscence bay. When he gets back I'll let you know what I find out! :)

Miss Mousie
It's a 90-minute drive from San Juan, and includes some scary mountain driving, but Caguana Ceremonial Park is loaded with beautiful petroglyphs. I think the museum was closed when I was there, but the grounds had plenty to see. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/caguana-ceremonial-park/
J-rap
Hi again! I have just a few tips for you. My son just returned yesterday. :) They loved it. They said the old town of San Juan was really beautiful. They stayed in a little b&b just outside of the old town. They hopped a bus and were in the old town in 5 minutes. They found their accommodations on www.airbnb, although I imagine you have accommodations already. They didn't rent a car because they heard driving wasn't too fun there, and they got by fine. (Although they did say the driving really didn't look too bad, and if they go there again they might rent a car.) They said the two Spanish fortresses (I think there were two) in San Juan were amazing, and well worth seeing. One of the fortresses has a wall you can walk along, and they did that at sunset and said it was quite spectacular. They took the ferry to Vieques Island and went on a kayak tour of the bioluminescent bay. They said it was absolutely incredible, not to be missed. He said at first they didn't see a thing, and started thinking the whole thing was a scam! :) Then they turned a corner, and it was almost unreal. (And fyi, you don't see the glow unless there is movement in the water.) They didn't have a rental car on the island either, so weren't able to get everywhere, but they did a lot of walking and it was fine. There was a series of beaches on the island that you can walk to. The first one was crowded and marked with a flag (too dangerous for swimming), so they kept walking from beach to beach (they were all kind of connected but you need to walk through woods, etc. to get to the different ones), until they found one that was just right. It was in a little cove with beautiful, calm, turquoise-colored water and only a couple families. So I guess keep walking until you find the right one! They said people were all very friendly and laid back. Anyway, that's not much info, but maybe it'll give you an idea or two. Have fun!!
