The Crazy 4
Wonder how a switch from MUS to Saxon would be. I want to use a skill-mastery approach, then switch to a spiral approach. Can someone share their experience or any comments or help will greatly appreciate it. Thank you
Sleep-Deprived
I have used Saxon exclusively, however my second son was struggling a bit in 1st grade and I thought I'd try MUS. When the materials came I realized it would be a huge transition from the fundamentals he'd already learned. The foundations (methods) are SO different. The hundred number chart is the most obvious example. In Saxon it is numbered starting from 1, but with MUS it starts with 0. It would be very helpful for you to get your hands on the Saxon books to see the differences.
Lugrita
With my first 3 kids, we went from Singapore (just a couple of years, so my 2nd child had just 1 year of it, and my 3rd child didn't use Singapore at all) to MUS to Saxon. MUS is wildly different from Saxon, but I think it's far easier to go from MUS to Saxon than vice versa. My older 3 kids were in 1st, 4th, and 6th grades when we switched from MUS to Saxon and it was a very smooth transition, and they all did very well with Saxon from the start. I used Saxon's placement tests and placed my then-1st-grader in Saxon 2, my 4th grader in 5/4, and my 6th grader in 7/6. If you desire to use Saxon throughout high school, I definitely recommend switching over by 3rd-4th grade. My oldest son is now heading into high school and he is starting to have trouble with Saxon, so we are integrating LOF and we plan to use TT for him next year. My next-youngest child is doing well with Saxon, and my youngest two are doing the best with it because they've used it from the beginning. The Crazy 4
My oldest is in Saxon 6/5 right now, I started homeschooling her in 1st and started with Abeka, switch to Rays Arithmetic mid 2nd, then to Saxon intermediate 3 in 4th. I like Saxon but Ive read that Intermediate 3 and up are very different from 1-3. So, I am exporting my options for grades k-3 for other 2 DDs. thank you for your help.
