Freckles
My dd13 aka "Snow White" will be 14 in a very short time. We decided today to have a 1940's themed tea party. We have a courtyard in the front of our house that is very private. We have quite a few pieces of furniture from that time period. I thought it would be fun to set up a sitting room and dining room outside. I have a couple of settee's and chairs that would be perfect to pair with an end table and lamp. I also have some original Life magazines from the mid- 40's that I could put on the tables. I thought it might be a fun "photo booth" opportunity. I'm planning on hanging up twinkle lights and placing plenty of flower bouquets throughout the area. We have an old record player console/cabinet that I'm going to use to disguise the ipod speakers for some big band and swing music. My friend is going to help me prepare a several course finger food menu. I will pull out all of my mis-matched china for the event. All of that was to ask, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for a small budget to make this a memorable event?

Acadie
That sounds like so much fun! Have you seen the American Girl Molly McIntire books? Not the novels, but the history, craft and cookbook. The target audience, of course, is younger than your dd, but they'd be great to page through for period details, decorating ideas, recipes etc. http://www.amazon.com/Welcome-Mollys-World-1944-American/dp/1562477730/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361144311&sr=8-1&keywords=molly%27s+world http://www.amazon.com/Mollys-Cookbook-Dining-American-Pastimes/dp/1562471171/ref=pd_sim_b_8 http://www.amazon.com/Mollys-Craft-Book-Projects-American/dp/156247118X/ref=pd_sim_b_6

Desert Rat
It sounds wonderful! I wish I could come. I am a mostly rockabilly girl and lean toward 40s versus 50s. I just learned how to do victory curls, even. It might be fun to go get some 45 records and put a picture of the birthday girl and her friend on each one. There are always tons of records cheap at thrift stores. What a great idea for a party.

Maybe you could make up some ration books with tickets to turn in for the refreshments. You could post some online photos around for a period look. Play some Benny Goodman, or Glen Miller Big Band music, for sure. (Just an aside: That music was actually mentioned by the buyer of one of my houses. He said he just HAD to live there because it was so nostalgic. He paid OVER asking price.)
