Anyone else planning 9th grade, yet?

Recommended Posts

Since the consensus seems to be it's not too early for next years plans, let's talk 9th grade...The last dc will be entering 9th grade next year, and I think I'm pretty set, but I'm still trying to hash some things out.

Math:

Prentice Hall Algebra I w/ weekly tutor

English:

Uhh...still trying to figure this one out. Sci-fi/ Fantasy maybe.. We are going to try to get through Elegant Essay and Windows to the World before the start of next year so we can spend a good amount of time on literary analysis/writing; maybe revisiting WWS2. Still need a grammar...VfCR B/C...

OM:

Biology w/a-g lab class

Geography

Integrated Health/PE

Art/Photography

MIT OpenCourseware:

Video Game Theory and Analysis

My 9th grade plans are in the 10th grade thread because my teens will be 8th & 9th on paper (we have to register) but will be completing 1/2 their grade 10 credits (homeschooling in Alberta has it's perks, our credits are done differently than in the states. No one cares if they did the work in jr high or high school, just that they did). SO to see my list you have to go over there.

My plans are still very much in flux, but this is what I have tentatively:

Math - Derek Owens Geometry

Science - Derek Owens Physics

Foreign Language - French 2 at UMS

History - Still deciding between World History I (ancient through 1500 or so) with Speilvogel's Western Civilizations + various Eastern hemisphere resources or something else.

English - Still trying to narrow down a book list, leaning toward LTOW 1 for writing, a resource book for grammar review as needed (I have several on the shelf), probably Vocabulary Workshop C & D for vocab/spelling, possibly begin working on rhetoric selections from TWTM

Logic - Intermediate Logic (I hope to do this over the summer instead)

Art - Classical Drawing (.5 credit) and pottery class

Music - Guitar lessons (not for credit), possibly adding a piano class

PE - Tennis lessons

She does volunteer work here and there when opportunities present themselves, but she needs to find somewhere to put in regular volunteer hours. We'll also do some PSAT prep in the fall for a practice run.

My very rough plan --

Geometry -- Teaching Textbooks

English I -- IEW (Elegant Essay?), Wordly Wise, Editor in Chief, various novels with lit guides

World History -- Glencoe with Oak Meadow syllabus

Spanish I -- Rosetta Stone/Mango

Science -- Integrated Physics and Chemistry using DIVE and BJU (maybe -- this is still very much undecided)

Logic -- Traditional Logic with DVDs, The Fallacy Detective (do I need to add more for a credit?)

Career Planning -- materials TBD (0.5 credit)

PE/Health -- baseball, golf, continue with cardio and strength training at home, add some health component

Here is mine, somewhat subject to change:

Algebra II: Saxon

Latin II: Florida Virtual School

Bible: Precepts studies (I don't usually assign credit, but I do have to allow time to do it)

Literature: American Lit reading list with outside tutor/group

Engish: R & S 8 and Classical Writing Herodotus

Logic: Traditional Logic I & II

Biology: Apologia biology with lab -- I'll organize a group of 10 students for lab/enriching activities

History: undecided. I really want to do the Omnibus I self-paced course. Ds is strong in history; one possibility is to have him read HOAW over the summer and then go on to Omnibus I in August.

Well. That felt good to get on paper!
