Any idea what kind of paint to use to alter playmobil?

I found some playmobil zoo animals on clearance and I want to use them to make a Wild Kratts themed playset for my kids for their birthdays.

 

To make this work, I would need to paint a blue outfit on a playmobil figure and a green outfit on anther. Is any paint that is lower in toxicity that would stick to playmobil plastic?

 

I am not incredibly crafty so please let me know if this is an idea doomed to fail.

Lego folks use model car paint to do customs. I don't know how non-toxic it is for play later, though.
