Anyone else having trouble buying LabPaqs? (Update)

Recommended Posts

Problem fixed! The representative I emailed had no idea what she was doing. A very nice lady from LabPaq called me (after I called the main number to the company) and assured me they welcome selling to homeschoolers. So I will get the kit and the Teacher's Manuals with no problem.

So, if any of you want to order LabPaqs, call the main number on the site and do not send an email.

Whew, what a relief.

Brenda,

Did you actually get samples sent?  I just got off the phone with a representative at Labpaq, and she sounded totally confused about my request.  She just kept assuring me that they were high quality, well written, bought by lots of colleges, homeschoolers, etc., and seemed to think that would clinch the deal.  I am very intriqued by labpaqs, but it's hard to think of plunking down $200 with nothing but a list of supplies and labs to go on.  I wish I could see even just one screen shot of the CD.  What did they send you, and do you have any advice on how I could get them to send it to me?

They sent me a sample lab description from the lab manual. I had to ask twice because I wanted one for physics, and they first sent me one from a Biology kit. I corresponded with them via email.

HTH,

Brenda

(I still have the PK-01 physics labpaq for AP Physics B for sale on the swap board if anyone needs it.)

Mama-san, I'd love to know how your labpaq looks!  Thanks.  I'm especially curious to get a better sense of what the lab manual looks like.

Brenda, yes that helps a lot.  After the info you gave me, I e-mailed them back and knew more clearly what to ask for.  We'll see if I get a good answer!  Thanks.

Well, after trying three times (by email and phone), I gave up trying to get a sample of the lab manual from Labpaq.  Each time, a woman from the Labpaq company--the same one answered all my emails and phone calls and identified herself by name, so I know it's the same person--made very clear that they "couldn't" send any sample whatsoever, citing repeatedly the excuse that it is "intellectual property."  She kept telling me it was very good and lots of colleges and homeschoolers use it, and she seemed to think that her word alone would be more than enough to convince me to buy.

Of course, every curriculum provider out there who puts samples on their web site is letting us sample their "intellectual property," but she seemed to think my request was surprising and a bit odd.  I just couldn't spend so much money for something after having seen only a list and photo of the contents.

Then I found this review of Labpag in the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education: http://jmbe.asm.org/index.php/jmbe/article/view/335/html

It raised a few more questions in my mind.

About this time someone on the WTM forums introduced me to The Home Scientist (http://www.thehomescientist.com), which does something a lot like Labpaq for bio and life science, chem, and forensic science.  Plus, they not only put a sample of the lab manual on the web site, they put the whole thing there for free!  I liked the look of it a lot, and I liked the price just as much (less expensive than Labpaq), so I decided to go with it.

I can't yet vouch for The Home Scientist, but we are planning to make it our lab component for chemistry this year, and we have high hopes, having read through the manual very carefully.  I do not mean to badmouth Labpaq at all.  I am certain that it is excellent and it sounds like it serves families very well, but I wanted to mention this in case it might offer a choice to others who are looking for a good lab component for any of these sciences.
