Just recently I noticed my fingernails are in really rough shape. Deep vertical ridges.

I've read that these are age related (lovely) and there's not much you can do about it, but thought I'd ask for some advice.

Has anyone here treated these with success or have any ideas?

I'm using vitamins, coconut oil on them now. I bought some ridge filler hoping that if I coat them it will help the new growth come in a little more even. But I might just be barking at the moon.

Here's the info I have. Right now, I have horizontal ridges on one of my nails and I know that I'm doing everything right. I guess it's a part of aging.

VERTICAL RIDGES

Due to age – think of vertical ridges as wrinkles on your nails

Buff gently and just a few times per week – 3 or 4 swipes per nail per week

As we age, more biotin is rerouted to support vital organs like the heart. The result is that we often get ridges on our nails. Take at last 2.5 mg of Biotin daily

HORIZONTAL RIDGES OR DENTS

Trauma caused by picking at your cuticle or continually hitting the front edge of your nail

Dents indicate that some condition – a high fever, nutritional deficiencies, psoriasis, or trauma from surgery – has actually affected nail growth

Eat enough protein – 55 grams per day

Supplement with up to 10,000 IU Vitamin A daily to help your nails metabolize the protein

3 mg dietary silicon to strengthen nails

As we age, more biotin is rerouted to support vital organs like the heart. The result is that we often get ridges on our nails. Take at last 2.5 mg of Biotin daily

Thanks Negin. I've changed my intake of biotin and did buff them last night. I've never buffed out ridges before, but that really worked a miracle. My cuticles are pretty rough also, so I oiled them and clipped where needed. Looks like someone else's hands!

Choosing between olive oil, coconut oil or vitamin E oil, which is most effective for cuticle skin health?

I have them (and they're getting worse, maybe b/c of age) and I just recently read somewhere it was due to low B-12. I ALWAYS have low B-12 and take supplements daily. Not sure if it's true, but worth checking into!

I would probably go mostly for vitamin E, but honestly, I think that they're all excellent and would probably rotate - one week each or every day or whatever.
