Tapestry of Grace, lower grammar, one child

Has anyone used TOG for one child in lower grammar stage? Now that the books are available to see on the website (I could never figure it all out before) I am very interested. If you can compare/contrast to Sonlight that would be even better. It seems that it has projects...is that true?

I will be using TOG for my youngest. We will be starting in 3rd grade, but due to age will mostly use LG books at that point. I will also be starting with Year 2. I'm going to use SotW for Ancients in second grade.

I can't really compare it to Sonlight, as I don't really like Sonlight. It's too disjointed for me. Also, I don't mind the money for ToG because I used it with my oldest as well, so I already know I will use it for two cycles with my youngest. If I were only using it once I might feel differently.

It does have projects, I love the book lists and I also love that I can pick and choose what I want to do. Some people become overwhelmed with all the choices, but that's what works best in our house

Right now, I'm using it for one child, grammar stage. He was 6 when we started, now 7, but he reads lower and upper grammar books. We left Sonlight for TOG. I like that it relies on nonfiction books to teach history and adds in some fiction and I felt that Sonlight was the other way around, relying more on the fiction. I like that it feels a lot more cohesive than Sonlight also. You do have to be able to pick and choose which books/activities you want to use. But, I don't find that it takes me any more time than Sonlight since I make all the choices before the school year begins.

If YOU like it and will enjoy learning along side your child, go for it. It wouldn't be my first choice for a little one if I was ONLY looking at the child, but I never do that; I always look at the TEACHER first.

If looking through the samples excites you and you can afford it, then it sounds like a great choice for your family.

I have used it for 3 years with a single LG child and now with a tagalong preschooler. We are getting to the point that I need to start transitioning to UG.

It has been a very good fit for us, because dd7 really, really loves history. We read all of the recommended books, as well as all of the alternates, and we supplement with SOTW audio books. I would not recommend TOG for any single child if they didn't at least like history, but especially not for a LG child. There is a lot of reading that many would consider dry or textbook-y. I don't know what the upper level literature is like, but for LG, it is very heavy on the non-fiction history and lighter on the literature and historical fiction. I have not used SL, but I would guess that SL would be just the opposite.

There are very good activities and projects. Mostly I had my dd the activity books and send her to her father. :thumbup1: They are very easy things to do, but I don't personally like crafts and projects and such.

We have done a lot of the mapping, but I have been letting that go, because I find the assignments to be either way too easy or way to advanced for the level, and I am tired of tweaking.

I don't do the writing. I don't like the approach. There is not enough instruction for me or my student.
