clarkacademy
I would really like to hear from people who have used this. Will it be helpful with a student who is struggling?
Mrs Mungo
We use Analytical Grammar. What age are you talking about? If they are *really* struggling with grammar, then I might suggest starting with Junior Analytical Grammar.

I will add that I (personally) would use JAG before AG with any child under 8th grade.
Jean in Newcastle
Ds started using it when he was 13. He had hated Rod and Staff with a passion but liked (ok tolerated better) Analytical Grammar. It is very systematic in it's approach. You parse (identify all the parts of speech) first and then go back and diagram them. There isn't a lot of time spent on explaining the parts of speech in AG, in my opinion. There might be more in JAG, which I have not used.
clarkacademy
One boy will be 12 and the other is 14 he will be 15 in August. They both just seem to forget what they learned the day before.
Alenee
We used Shurley Grammar before moving onto AG. Dd started it in 6th grade w/o issue. She did NOT like the sheer volume of sentences to diagram. Other than that, it was a great program. My next dd who also did SG will be starting AG next year. I expect it will be even easier for her. mommyx4
We have been doing Jr AG this winter with my 5th grade boys. At first, I wasn't sure if they would get it(and at times they didn't seem to get it) but now we are 1/2 way through and they totally get it! I also bought the dvd to teach with it. You don't need it, but I needed those couple of minutes to tend to the baby while they are being taught. Then we go over it together. Hoot
DS13 started AG at the beginning of the new year and is doing VERY well with it. While he'll NEVER love diagramming sentences, he definitely understands it more than any other grammar he's had in the past. He particularly likes seeing the lessons being taught initially on the DVD. One thing I don't like is the sheer number of sentences for each day. If I'm remembering correctly, the instructions said that each day shouldn't take more than 30 min. or something along those lines. DS13 has easily been taking at least twice that amount of time every day. I'm thinking of having him do even or odd problems each day instead. livetoread
My son is 14 and in 8th. He is dyslexic, and LA is so not his thing. He did some Growing with Grammar before this year, but none of it took-I mean none. We started AG this year, taking it slow, and he is finally learning grammar. I was worried at first because he was lost at the first exercise, but we stuck with it. We only do five sentences a day, and he's doing well with what he does. It has been one of my more successful curriculum choices. He is a little peeved that I told him it would go fast and he wouldn't have to do it all year, but since we are following a different, slower schedule we may end up doing just that. unsinkable
I'm bumping this because the AG author's DD is on this board and maybe she'll see it. I can't remember her board name right now...anyone remember?
SquirrellyMama
We are not loving AG. We should have been done with this year back in November but my dd is still on week 7. It is my fault as well as my dd's fault. I think she gets overwhelmed by all of the diagramming and I'm too tired to fight most of the time. I wonder if she could just do half of the diagramming. It is a good program and I think she understands grammar better using it but the diagramming is intimidating. Kelly

If she is under 10th grade and struggling, then I would consider doing JAG. It is for the younger crowd, she could work through it quickly and it might boost her confidence. happycc
How is JAG different than HAKE 5? Anyone?
Running the race
The Potter's School uses Analytical Grammar as part of the English 3 class. My 14yo son is using it this year. They cover the entire program in one year.He first watches the video. Then I have him do one practice exercise, only the evens or odds. If he does well on that, he takes the test. End of Unit. For some of the more difficult units, he has done two days of practice exercises. I never have him do all of the problems except on the test. He is required to do them all for the class. The program is thorough and incremental. Even the tests are open book, which takes some of the pressure off the student.
