Esse Quam Videri
Has anyone successfully jumped into R&S in the 5th, 6th, or 7th grade book without any formal grammar instruction prior? Trying to decide if we should drop R&S 3 in favor of more CM style LA.
Erica in OR
We haven't BTDT as you describe, but having used R&S 3 through 7, I would not recommend jumping into the 7th grade book or probably even the 6th grade book without any formal grammar instruction. Grade 7 has material that I needed to review. I think 5th grade would be doable. Erica in OR
myfunnybunch
I agree with Erica. R&S builds on skills taught in previous years. Long ago, my first year homeschooling, I tried to start R&S 7 with my then-7th grader. It didn't work so well. We had a lot of review to do to make it work. LivingHope
The 5th R&S book is the best place to start.
TGHEALTHYMOM
I tried to jump into 6 after much debate. I ended up getting Analytical Grammar on here so we just started it. I will try to update. I have 8 children and just cannot teach several different levels English. We also started The Latin Road and have only done memory work, along with Prima Latina which covered some basic English grammar.
~Anna~
I am doing the 6th grade book with my 7th grader, who only really knew the basic parts of speech. She is doing great with it.
Holly
We dropped R&S to do CM style LA. I plan on going through a one year grammar program for 6th or 7th. We've been doing light grammar along with Prima Latina this year.
Penguin
I started my 6th grader in the 5th grade book. He had previously had formal grammar instruction in school, but he did not know anything about diagramming. Not did he know the essential terms (direct object, past participle, predicate adjective, etc.). It has gone really well, and I am happy.
