how do you set that option up?

is there anyway for the receiver to know you have that option??

How to set it up depends on what email program you are using. I use Thunderbird and it is under Account Settings, then Return Receipts. I can set it differently for each email address, but then it is set for every message I send from that email address. (So you could set the option, then send the email, then turn it off again if you don't want it for everything.) And yes, I can be notified if the sender has requested notification. So I could be able to see if you requested notification if I have it set that way. That's probably not the answer you wanted. :)

eta: I saw above that it isn't available on gmail, but since I read my gmail account through Thunderbird I can set it that way.

I wishe Gmail had this too when I was GS leader and was sending out emails. I would always end up calling the night before making sure they were coming and had their daughter's permission slips signed. Half the time they didn't check their emails. Frusterating.

Sometimes you can see it if the person has the same email service you do. If I send an email from my aol account to someone else with an aol account, I can see if/when they read it.

I have aol too...how do you do that? can you see when others (non aol users) read their email...and vice versa, can they see when I read their email??

Only for other AOL users, and yes they can do the same for you.

In your Sent mail list, right click on the email you want to check. There will be an option for check message status.

And even if you set the option (in Microsoft Outlook), the person receiving can have set THEIR options to NOT respond to such things. I've got mine set that way.

Yes, this. I remember when I was on comcast I used to sometimes get emails that would ask "let so-n-so know you have received this email?" or something along those lines. I always chose not to let them know. I'd email them back as soon as I could. I felt weird having the exact time-stamp of when I first read it reported back to them. I remember also having the option of requesting such notice when I sent email. I haven't noticed anything like that now on gmail, sending or receiving.

Echoing this. I also had my email alert me when someone's email wanted to report back to the sender that it had been read. Mine was set to not let them know.

You can see if they've read it if you send via Facebook messaging. I really hate that.
