MarigoldHS
My son is currently in first grade at a montessori school. His school does not teach manuscript. He is very good at cursive but cannot write print to save his life. We are going to homeschool him in the fall and I'm not sure what direction to go in for handwriting. Should I teach him proper print or continue with his cursive and forget print all together? If we skip print, what would be a good handwriting curriculum for a 7 year old who has been writing cursive for two years? what level would he be at? Thanks very much! PinkyandtheBrains.
Eventually he will need to learn print since many forms and such are print only....though with the computer age who knows....as for handwriting curriculum I'd pick something that looks similar to what he has already learned. 2smartones
Ask which curriculum has been used in the past. For a boxy look, go with something like Handwriting w/o Tears. For a loopy look (traditional), go with something like Abeka or Pentime. For someone with young motor skills, I'd be most inclined to use Abeka. They start with cursive, so they'll have the most material with properly spaced lines (unless you want to print your own curriculum). For print, I prefer Handwriting w/o Tears. I don't like it for cursive because it just looks like connected print. It's not very elegant.
Tracy
A lot of people teach cursive first and do not teach print until much later. It is easy to teach, as print is largely just simplified, unconnected cursive. At this point, I would not use any handwriting curriculum at all but just check the handwriting he does in his various subjects. Once he is old enough to need to take standardized tests, where he may need to fill in the bubbles, then I would instruct him in print.
