Mom0012 Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 My husband received an iPod touch and he was going to make it a "family" iPod. He already owns a nano or something else. When I set up the new iPod, I did it with my husband's name and e-mail. Well, my husband never uses the touch, and it has basically become my dd's with my son using it some. I want to buy another iPod so each of the kids will have one, but since this current one is only 8 GB and my dd uses it a lot, I want to get a 16 gb one and give that to my dd and have my son use the 8 gb one. Can I do this without my dd losing all her apps? I'm thinking it wouldn't be such an issue if I had originally set the iPod up in her name, but I set it up in my husband's. Maybe I could move all my dd's info to the new ipod, keeping it in my husband's name, but changing the e-mail address to hers. I'd prefer to get it in her name, though, because it's a pain to have all my husband's and dd's stuff intermingled on itunes. Then I could reset the old iPod with my son's name and e-mail address? What do you think? I'm considering heading over to the Apple store tomorrow, but I know it will be a complete zoo in there, so I'm kind of reluctant to make the trip. It's quite a hike. I think the main thing I need to know is if I can change the name and e-mail on the current ipod to my dd's name without losing the apps. If I can do that, I should be able to move her stuff to the new iPod. Lisa Quote
Arcadia Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 The apps on the ipod touch are tied to the account name. So when you change to your daughter's name on the ipod, you lose the apps purchased under your husband's account. Quote
jelbe5 Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Are you planning to set up a new iTunes account for each of your children? If not, you can have your children each have their own iPod but it is tied to your account. First thing you want to do is sync the iPod to your computer to back up everything. To change the name follow these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3965 To change the email account do this: Open the settings app, tap on Mail, contacts and calendars and then delete your husband's mail account from the device. Then do this to set up the email for your child: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4810 My dh and I have iPhones and my dd has an iPod Touch. She shares her device on our iTunes account, but her device has her name and her email. When the devices are synced to the computer you can select which apps you want to have be specific to that device by doing this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386 Quote

It looks like this is what I will have to do if she doesn't want to lose her apps. Lisa Quote

Most of the apps she has are actually free, but she is not happy about losing everything she's set up on the ipod. I wish we'd just originally set this account up in her name. It would be so much easier to sync without all my husband's data in itunes. He was insistent that he would use the ipod so I set it up for him, but he's never even looked at the thing. Thanks! Quote
