SOTW - logic stage

Recommended Posts

I *think* I'm going to do SOTW 3 with my child entering the logic stage right now. We are just finishing up SOTW 2 and while I was trying to decide on what to do I think this is the most efficient and affordable option at this point.

I was thinking I would still use the Jackdaw Portfolios and Critical Thinking in US history as outlined in my copy of TWTM.

Do you think this would work?

That's what we have done. We started history "late" - afterschooling in 2nd grade - and didn't start homeschooling full time till 4th grade. She completed SOTW2 & did half of 3 in 4th grade, and is just finishing SOTW3 and beginning 4 in the middle of 5th grade.

I think it works well. We do a ton of supplementing, using SOTW as a spine. We have lots and lots of add-ins to expand American history. So it's not the only thing we are doing. We do a timeline, and map work, and the SOTW 3 & 4 chapters are very amenable to outlining, unlike SOTW 1&2.

When I compared using SOTW to using the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, it was no contest! Reading SOTW is much more interesting than reading Kingfisher.

Some don't find SOTW rigorous enough for the Logic Stage, but I don't agree. Rigor can be increased by adding depth and breadth with the supplemental readings you choose, and by increasing the output you require (whether written, or via deeper discussion). It doesn't require a more difficult spine. IMHO, of course.

This is what we will be doing as well. We have a 9 year old using SOTW 2 right now and when he is finished he will start SOTW right as he is transitioning to the Logic stage by age. We always use a lot of additional reading etc because that is what works for him but I am planning on adding a bit more to make sure it is up to where I want him to be working as a 5th grader. It's a very inexpensive spine and I like the test book and having all the review questions ready for me to discuss with him.

I kind of wish PHP sold a logic stage level activity guide without all the coloring pages etc (which mostly go unused here.) Maybe add in some writing assignments or such.

I figure if I learned a ton from it, it's good enough for my kids. I plan to repeat SOTW 1 next year with my will-be 5th and 3rd graders. It's fun! We will do the narration and mapwork. We will do lots of extra reading. It might go faster than it did before or we might just go deeper but I am looking forward to it. So many resources for Ancients!

We are using SOTW 1 again for 5th grade. I am requiring that she read the ancient section of the Usborne Encyclopedia and take notes, read SOTW 1 herself (no audio book this time), and take the tests that go along with it. She is also using the IEW Ancient theme book, so there is some history there as well as research skills. I will probably ramp it up next year, but I am not sure how yet. (I have ordered the Kingfisher encyclopedia, though.). It is so hard not to use SOTW. It is so good and I already owned it. I personally learn something new every time I read it.
