tld Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Have you used it and liked it? Not liked it? Are there any holes in the program? Would it be good to supplement it with anything? I'm considering switching over from Sing Spell Read Write, but I don't want to step down in thoroughness to do so. Quote
DaffodilDreams Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I used this with dd when she was younger. She really liked it at the time and did well with it. She didn't seem to be able to connect what she learned to actual books, though. In other words, she could do the lessons just fine, but I wasn't seeing improvement in her general reading ability. I'm not sure that was the fault of Progressive Phonics, though. Looking back, it seems like her brain just wasn't going to "get" reading until it was ready for it, and all the phonics programs available weren't going to speed up the process. So, other than saying dd loved her lessons with that program, I can't really offer a great deal of feedback. Quote
thowell Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 This is how Dd9 leaned to read. I used the program exclusively and it worked great! She nows read on a 7th grade level in 4th grade. However she has also been taught to read and use the KJV bible since she started reading and I think this has added to her level. I think PP is great! Quote
sweetpea3829 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 We have been using Progressive Phonics for almost a year now. We started with HOP and liked it pretty well until midway through the 2nd level I think it was. Just not enough explanation of anything. I had intended on purchasing a new LA curriculum but DH had an accident and missed 7 months of work because of it. So we had to resort to free...and Progressive Phonics has worked well for us. I don't think it has nearly enough reading practice. I also don't think it has enough phonics practice. So I supplement with Spectrum Phonics workbooks and just pull pages that correlate with what we're learning. If I had a choice in the matter, I probably would NOT go back and use it again, just because it was a lot of work to supplement it. But it did it's job well enough. And for what it's worth, even though DH has been back to work for several months now, we're still using Progressive Phonics...I intend to finish the series with both of my Bigs and then go back and review with ETC over the summer. For my Littles, I'm exploring AAR. Quote
