Jayne J
I am planning to read The Republic for my own self-education, and have no idea which translation to buy. Any suggestions?
JennyD
IME, the longtime favorite among scholars of ancient political thought is Allan Bloom's translation, which hews quite literally to the original Greek. That is the one I use and like, but I don't read Greek so I can't speak meaningfully to the quality of the translation. It is also possible that classicists, who come at the text a bit differently, may have a different preference -- I do not know about that. Candid
I have no direct help, but I will tell you that I often wind up buying more than one copy or tracking down samples from various translations to find what suits me. Amazon's look inside feature can sometimes help with this.
Guest Zwhale
Oxford Classics - nice little summaries before each section and notes are at back of book so can easily be ignored if one wants to read with no textual interruptions. I also enjoyed the free audio book from Librivox : http://librivox.org/platos_republic/ Enjoy!
