Wabi Sabi
My 2nd grader (slightly older 2nd grader, FWIW) used FLL1 last year and this year we're using FLL2. I like the approach, yet at the same time it's beginning to get a bit boring and monotonous for us. I believe I read somewhere on this board that FLL3 is a reviews all of the material presented in the previous editions. Is this correct? If so, I've been contemplating just shelving the rest of FLL2 and moving ahead to the third book. In that case, I see that there's a separate student workbook for the next level. Is it necessary or will just the instructor pages suffice? If it matters, we do have the student workbook version of WWE and while I like having the passages and questions already prepared for me, we don't use the actual student pages at all. Ds completes all the work on plain notebook paper because the lines in WWE are just way, way too big for him. Is the FLL3 workbook the same? boscopup
We did it. I had done FLL1 in about 3 weeks the second half of first grade, then did half of FLL2. Then we started 2nd grade, and I went ahead and got FLL3, which was a much better fit. Yes, it starts from the very beginning, but moves faster. The lines in the workbook for FLL3 are not like the WWE lines. I agree that the WWE lines were way too big - I had to make my own sheets for that. We had no problems with FLL3. In fact, I think a lot of the lines were just a single blank line. There may have been a very occasional 3-line thing for copywork? But it was smaller than the WWE lines, IIRC. weederberries
I agree. I think it can be done. There was a period of review at the beginning of 3 that we waded though quickly after completing FLL 1 and 2 in 1st grade. There is still plenty of review at the beginning of 4, but 3 is where it gets meaty. I would recommend the workbook for 3.
Wabi Sabi
Thanks everyone. I think we're going to take a break from FLL2. Actually, I think we'll just be done with all formal grammar for the rest of the year in favor of reading and memorizing some poetry on our own. Also, ds has been into Mad Libs lately and that's really helped with identifying the various parts of speech so I'll encourage him to keep doing those. I picked up a huge book of Mad Libs this afternoon and organized a section of poetry books on the shelf. We can always pick back up with FLL3 in the fall. skeeterbug
I got tired of FLL2 so we are taking a break from it. For now we are reading through Grammarland and doing the worksheets that go along with it. And reading Brian P. Cleary books. When we are done I'm going to take another look at FLL2 and decide if we will finish it or just move on to FLL3. Also going to look at MCT Island for another approach.
