Guest inoubliable
There has to be a better way to use Pinterest. I never got the appeal, but since I've been house hunting a friend of mine has been sending me these links to decorating ideas and color schemes and landscaping projects. I ask her where she finds this stuff and she says "Pinterest!". So I go on there and I'm completely...antsy. I want to make boards and organize everyone's pins. How can I just look up what I want to look up and ignore the cupcakes and exercise plans and jewelry? I see a search box, but when I put in "1930 architecture" it doesn't just pull up stairways and windows and doors. I get some weird stuff! Help? I'm being told that there is some amazing inspiration on the site, and I can't seem to find it!
Scarlett
Well I can't ever find much on my own either. I like my friends boards and I reprint a lot of stuff...but I am clueless too on how to search for stuff. I do better with houzz.com
nmoira
All I see is a bunch of people pinning things their either never going to make or use or build, or I'm never going to make or build or use. Pretty pictures. I'd rather look at stuff I'm never going to make or build or use on sites like Lifehacker. And... brace yourself... there's occasionally a project there I actually do. windmillmarie
Wow. I have exactly the same problem as you. I really want to love it and people seem to be inspired. I feel like I want to reclassify everything and organize it. It's too much clutter!

I should probably just go straight there, huh? All I see is a bunch of people pinning things their either never going to make or use or build, or I'm never going to make or build or use. I like browsing Lifehacker. That, and Instructables. We've done a few things from each site. I really just wanted to find some pictures of 1930s houses with original stuff still in them, you know? Just out of curiosity. Wow. I have exactly the same problem as you. I really want to love it and people seem to be inspired. I feel like I want to reclassify everything and organize it. It's too much clutter! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one!! It makes me itch and I want to starting putting everything away! LOL. And the endless repins! GACK! Mnemosyne
I did see a lot of pins that originally came from houzz.com. I should probably just go straight there, huh? Houzz is easily my favorite place to go for ideas on home design/architecture. I could spend hours there (and I do, with their iPhone app). Great ideas and it's easy to sort pictures you find into different ideabooks.
Guest
The search box searches the descriptions of the pictures. Lots of times, the pictures I like have a description of WOW! or Amazing! Not so much help when you are searching! Try searching exactly what you want: 1930's doors, 1930's house decor, 1930's windows, whatever. If you find a picture you like, look at the board it comes from. Someone may have it pinned in 1930's Architecture and bingo, you've hit the jackpot. (Proceed to follow that person's board!) On the other hand, you may search 1930's doors and find someone pinned it to their food board, which would do you no good. It's a crapshoot, but yes, the more you are on there, and the more people you find that fit your style, the more doors will open to you finding what you like. Guest
Oh, duh. I forgot you can search pins, boards, or pinners. (I always tend to just search pins.) If you type 1930 homes in your search box and then search boards, you should get a lot more, too.
Guest inoubliable
Thank you! I'll keep at it, then.
MommaOfalotta
I felt the same in the beginning! Keep at it. Im an addict now and I find so many awesome things and ideas. The search used to frustrate me but you will have better luck if you dont search too specific. Also I start browsing by category. Basically the longer you use it the more you *get* it. Now if I wasn't so OCD with my boards and organizing them...
Lady Florida.
I use Pinterest in place of some bookmarks. I try not to pin something I won't actually use, so I don't have boards for "pretty stuff" or "inspiring thoughts" or other such things I often see there. I have enough real and cyber clutter as it is. I don't need more. Lately I've been getting notices of people starting to follow me, and I posted on facebook this morning that all they'll get to see is a bookmark with pictures. Guest inoubliable
If you find some boards you really like follow them and whenever that pinner adds something you will get it sent to you on your following board. If you follow enough people that share the same interests you won't even need to do searches anymore. Oh, I didn't even think of following people on there! I thought it was a little stalker-ish. That makes sense, though. Thanks!
