blondeviolin
Singapore introduces multiplication in year 2 and works on memorizing 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 multiplication facts. I've not been requiring my daughter to memorize these facts because my intention is to move into Beast Academy next year where there is another section on skip counting and multiplication. Am I doing her a disservice by not requiring her to be automatic with these facts? She can solve multiplication and division via skip counting or rods so she understands the concepts. MinivanMom
I'm not sure that there's one right answer to this. I didn't make my oldest memorize her facts until after she learned 6, 7, 8, and 9 in Singapore 3a. Of course she had already memorized many of them through repeated use, but I didn't mind if she still solved some problems using skip counting. Once we had covered all the multiplication facts, then we set memorization as a goal. Ds7 is in the midst of multiplication right now, so he is free to still use skip counting (although he has most of them memorized). I find that my children have an easier time memorizing math facts as they use them in context rather than through rote memorization. I'm not sure what prerequisite knowledge is required for Beast Academy. If there is a section on skip counting and multiplication then I would guess that it's okay to still be working on memorization. Maybe someone who has used BA can give you some input on that. Elfknitter.#
I don't believe it's required, but we've yet to come to that chapter. :) Have you looked at the pretests?
Greenmama2
I don't think you are doing a disservice. Automacity will come with use anyway. We are in the same boat, having finished with SM 2 but I'm waiting a few more weeks to order BA since shipping is so ridiculous to here and we are at the expensive start of the year when extracurricular fees are due. We're taking a detour through LoF elementary & I'm not at all concerned about DD's memorisation. She can skip count easily by all of those anyway. There is no need to have facts memorized before BA, it starts at the beginning with multiplication. There is quite a bit of skip counting (they have found ways to make skip counting challenging) then it moves to multiplication.
