bella2005
I may have to put my DS7 into public school (or Christian that uses ACE Paces) for 2nd grade in the fall. (by force of needing income/job) But will HS as long as I can. To better prepare him for the change, what curriculum's would be best between now and then to make sure he is above standards and not behind if/when he goes into a classroom? We just finished MFW 1st, and I thought he was ahead, yet I worry (I'm a worrywart) that he is not. What is expected of graduating 1st and entering 2nd? THANK YOU!!! :)
Monica_in_Switzerland
I can't really answer your question directly, but just wanted to mention this: My mom works in a K and 1st grade class as a volunteer. She says that practically NONE of the children are "on target" for the supposed goals the school system sets for each year. You should be able to find your district's standards on their website, but just keep in mind that just because they set a certain standard does not mean (by a long shot) that most of the children are making that goal by graduation. Best of luck and I hope you find a solution that allows you to keep HSing.
lmrich
Look at your school's scope and sequence for second grade. It should provide you with a good idea of what is expected. But in general, if he can read well, write nicely, answer questions completely, add and subtract, he will be fine.
Rosepetal
Hi, Nice topic to discuss regarding public school system esp. in Canada.......Just curious to know how is the public school academically? Should we homeschool or can send kids to Canadian public schools incase of working mom/any reason?Being non-native want to send kids to public school so that they can be fluent in language......What are your views? Waiting for experienced and valueable suggestions.......
SilverMoon
If you go with the ACE school, work on his writing endurance and narration skills. Those books require gobs of reading comprehension type answers in all subjects. Strong narration skills will be very helpful.
mrshomework
Visit your local school districts website. Most public schools have the teachers names and an email address or phone you can use to contact them. Try emailing them and telling them your homeschooling situation and how your trying to prepare your child for public school. Some schools even post online what they are currently working on to keep the parents informed. Something to try.
bella2005
OMG writing. his least favorite thing. He was doing good with Spelling Workout A but lately that is a battle and I even cancelled one of his favorite activities today over it. Is there something better than that to use? Tidbits of Learning
You need to find out if they have a kindergarten and first grade exit exam. If they do, he has to pass it to go to the next grade. I would call the school and ask.
nansk
I'd probably focus on writing. They seem to do a lot of writing in PS early. It's not good writing, but just a lot of it. 100% agree with this. Also, work on skills like writing his name and date at the top of every worksheet, sitting still and listening with attention for up to 30 mins at a time, eating his lunch without help or prodding within 15-20 mins, washing his hands afterwards, etc. Oh! I forgot one important skill - asking for permission before using the bathroom. Also, just to add, I am not kidding here.

OneStepAtATime
If public school ranking is good in a city, then should we go for ps option?and which subjects to afterschooled in Grades 7 and 8? please reply... That really depends on the child, your particular situation and the school. Have the kids ever been in a public school setting? Have they taken any standardized tests? I have not attended school in a Canadian school system so I cannot speak to specifics there, but you should be able to find out some information on-line regarding school expectations for the age/grade level of your kids. Some kids do great in a public school setting, some do o.k. and some "get by" but don't really thrive at all. And there are others for whom it is truly a nightmare. I guess the same goes for homeschooling, too. One size just doesn't fit all...
