ksr5377
We have the perfect basement for finishing, except for the impossible stairway. Actually, it's more like the weird two doors you go through before the stairway. We really want to have a comfy couch down there, so I was thinking a sectional might be easier because of the many pieces. So I was wondering if anyone had the same issue and found a cough that was a winner. Do Ikea couches come in pieces?
Desert Rat
A futon comes to mind. The frames usually fold up and are easier to move. Our favorite couch of all time was a papasan couch, like the round chairs only seating 3 people. We called it the terminator because everyone who sat in it fell asleep, they were so comfortable. I still miss that couch!
Annie Laurie
We bought a loveseat from Ikea that was in pieces, but I don't know if they all come that way. It seems like Ikea would be a good bet though, smaller furniture for smaller spaces.
Unicorn.
We have a flexsteel that fit through our narrow door (it's 32" rather than 36"). We also had a lazy boy w/ recliners on each end before that. You just have to really shop around to find ones that will fit. Good luck! LucyStoner
Most moderately priced sofas come apart and can be reassembled in a space pinch. I learned this because we bought a townhouse. Just take the thin fabric cover off the bottom and look around. There should be bolts you can undo. The big piece of the sectional we had popped apart into 4 pieces- back, seat and arms. I wouldn't mess with a super nice or well made piece but it was fine for ours and we just stapled the fabric back on.
MercyA
We have a flexsteel that fit through our narrow door (it's 32" rather than 36"). We also had a lazy boy w/ recliners on each end before that. You just have to really shop around to find ones that will fit. Good luck! We also have a Lazy Boy full size sofa with dual recliners, and it fit down our basement stairs. Our stairs are tricky, because they turn halfway down. You just need to measure really well first. Good luck!
Oakblossoms
Our Ikea sectional comes in two pieces. We fit it down the Stairs that go into our house. Not sure if that helps. It is lightweight, too. My Aunt had a couch with recliners that weighed a metric ton:p. I would not want to be the person that fell on. Oakblossoms
You could build one, as well. I have seen some made out of twin matresses and pallets that looked comfy. If we end up needing an extra couch, I am using a bed. Just a long headboard in the side that is upholstered and lots of pillows.
sgo95
A modular sectional might be what you're looking for. Here are a few examples: American Signature Furniture Costco Macy's 1 Macy's 2 Macy's 3 HTH!
Alte Veste Academy
Yep, IKEA. The Ektorp sectional came in a couple of big boxes that would probably fit down your stairs. If the boxes don't, you can just unpack upstairs and carry down individual pieces. Those would fit easily.
Dandelion
We had the same problem, and actually had to send a couch back and get a refund after the delivery guys tried all different ways to get it down the stairs (our stairs turn halfway down - it wouldn't go around the corner). And yes, we measured but not well enough. :o We just decided to slipcover our old couch that was already down there, and bought two armchairs to go with it. Looks like you've received some good advice already. Good luck!
3andme
LL Bean makes a modular ultralight sectional that's compact and easy to move. A few of the reviewers of the product had the same dilemma your are facing. Crate and Barrel and West Elm also have quite a few smaller scale couches. If you want a wider selection, try Simplicitysofas. They manufacture sofas specifically for tight spaces.
KungFuPanda
Look up the Love Sac stores. It's fascinating . . . like the lego version of furniture. You can get a sectional that seats 20 onto your space!
Jeannie in NJ
our Ikea sectional is 3 pieces that fit together with giant like hook and eyes, so easy. Whenever I want to move the sectional, I just remove the cover, unhook the pieces, move them and rehook. I do this by myself, so easy. Also very sturdy, my family is hard on furniture and the sectional has never unhooked by accident .
kubiac
We have a LoveSac couch--I like it a lot, DH says it's not comfy enough but hey, at least we could get the parts through our narrow door in back room. Took teamwork to get it assembled but once we focused it was pretty easy.
Cinder
We have a comfy futon in our basement but we splurged on a higher quality mattress for it. We've had it about 10 years now and it's still comfy.
