Dmmetler
DD got the message through her Mathletics today-she's trying out the rounds now. She moved up an age division so she's interested in seeing what difference it makes. http://www.worldeducationgames.com/WEG2013#

Dmmetler
So far, she says spelling and math are "Easy" at the 8-10 age group, but science has "some stuff I don't know"-apparently including environmental statistics (how many animals are killed yearly by plastic waste type stuff), science history (What year was the Smallpox Vaccine invented) and, sadly US geography/compass points-"Which direction do you go to get from California to New York". The first two-well, we haven't done EVERYTHING yet. The third is a definite "How can you NOT know that!!!" situation-especially given that this is the kid who had a US map puzzle as a favorite toy at age 2 and could name all the states by their outlines. She also had an entire category on Buffalo??!!??

freerange
Thanks for posting about this. I was just thinking it would be good to find something like manga high for other subjects. I'm sure we'll have fun with this, even if only for a little while.
Dmmetler
You can subscribe to Mathletics and Spellodrome (both add lessons to the live rounds in the competition) after the competition ends, and last year there was a pretty big discount. DD really likes the live rounds (she's less thrilled with the lessons). I don't know if there's a way to get the science-there wasn't last year, but it seemed like they only barely got the software up before the games at all. I had the same issue, I went to their FB page and found a link there for registration that worked readily. Dmmetler
Has anyone else had trouble with the Science practice? We've tried two computers and three browsers, and it keeps hanging up and not loading. We're on windows XP, so I'm wondering if maybe our systems are too oid? Math and Spelling are working fine, but DD wants the science to work, since that was her best placing last year.

We have had a few problems with the games hanging, or enter not working. Overall though it is working on the Win 7 laptop. Thanks. That is good to know. Last year we gave up on the science one since we could not seem to get it to work. Do you happen to know if it would work on Windows 8 because we have only one windows 7 pc and both my boys would be interested in trying? We can't get Science to work here -- we're working on Macs and I assumed that was the issue. I'm relieved to know we're not alone!
Dmmetler
According to the website, there will be an app for each event out Feb 15 for iPads and Samsung tablets, so I'll let DD do the math/spelling (which she can do under XP) and then try downloading the app for science, and hopefully that will let her do the competition. Last year, the science worked, but with horrible lags and lock ups-it took the poor kid about 12 hours to do her 50 rounds, and this year, she's only been able to get in once in three attempts so far-so hopefully going through my iPad will solve that problem-and I think it would be less of an issue to do science on the iPad than some of the others (I can't imagine doing spelling on one!). blondeviolin
When we register, do I put my name in or my child's? I'm wondering if my 5yo might think this was fun... I know my 6yo will.
dbmamaz
i registered as parent and then it allows you to add as many kids as you want
dbmamaz
so both boys finally logged in. They both have windows 7 machines just around a year old and purchased for gaming, and they are having no trouble with the science. However, i'm surprised that my 16 yo is only getting arithmetic questions in the math section?
Dmmetler
Science is working on Windows XP this morning, pretty reliably.

However, i'm surprised that my 16 yo is only getting arithmetic questions in the math section? My DD is on 7th grade on mathletics, and still gets everything from arithmetic to logarithms in the live rounds (and the World Ed games only have 5 levels instead of 10, as Mathletics does). I think it's a span of what is considered reasonable mental math for the grade level.
dbmamaz
Well, math is not my teen's strength, so he was pretty pleased about doing well, but . . . i keep feeling like he really shouldnt be.
PinkyandtheBrains.
Does the math get more difficult? So far all we've seen in the age group for the 13 year old is arithmetic.
Dmmetler
I'm not in the 13 yr old group, but I'm guessing not-the American Math Challenge was FAR more difficult than the World Math games last year. My DD is in 8-10 and has had four operations, but no more than 2 digit numbers, while the AMC involved exponents, fraction operations, and so on. The thing is, time matters-the top scorers in math last year got something around 2000+ questions correct in 50 1 minute rounds. And that was in the 4-7 yr old age group. My DD, who is accurate, but tends to the slow side, was definitely an "Also ran" in math last year.
