swimmermom3 Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 That's a trick question. It would depend on why they were reading it, what they had read, and what they like to read. Quote
J-rap Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 A Dickens. As far as which one, it would depend a little on her, what she is studying, what she likes, what she has already read... Quote
swimmermom3 Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Now see, my oldest son has been in public school all of his academic career except for 7, 8, and 11th grade. He has not yet read...drum roll...The Iliad. Horrified, WTM gasps! Not to worry. The boy is not leaving my care without reading it. If we are going to finish out our senior year with one book, it is going to be a book that has moved literary mountains and human souls. My boy is going to love the Patrick Shaw-Stewart's WW I poem the Elizabeth Vandiver recites in her Iliad lectures. Think big. Think something that will enable your child to get subtle literary allusions and scholarly jokes. Think of something that will engage them on so many levels. Quote
swimmermom3 Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Screwtape Letters Good one. Which of course reminds me of Dante's Inferno. Or the two together. One could talk for weeks on those two books. Quote
ereks mom Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 Those are some interesting replies. I guess my question should have been worded more like this: Name ONE novel you think every kid should read before he graduates from high school. I think I'll go repost that as a new topic. ;) Quote
