faiths13
Im trying to pin down resources for 1st grade this fall. Im thinking of sticking with Singapore for math and ETC for phonics. Im thinking of maybe trying SOTW for history. I would love suggestions for 1st grade history, science, spelling, handwiting and if Im missing anything, lo. Chris in VA
Loved SOTW here. Our fondest memories involve that curriculum. We liked Spelling workout. Once dd knew how to form letters, we bagged the handwriting book and she just used spelling and history copy work/note booking for practice, which saved time. momma2three
We'll be doing 1st grade next year, and so far I've selected Pandia Press's history and science, and All About Spelling. I'd heard really good things about Wordly Wise, and I like the Kindergarten curriculum for that. I think we'll also do Winning With Writing for composition. I've already made a mess of handwriting: we started with Zaner-Bloser, but I thought she'd prefer D'Nealian so halfway through the year I switched to that. She really doesn't like the D'Nealian book (which I agree is kind of boring), but does like the handwriting. I think we're going to switch back to Zaner-Bloser next year. mary.margaret
SOTW is awesome. Either just listening to the audio CDs or actually reading it aloud. For 1st grade we read Christian Liberty Press nature readers; that's all we do for science. Though going through the Kingfisher Animal and Human Body encyclopedias like it outlines in the WTM is also good. I'd look into Logic of English. It would take care of phonics (written like ETC) and spelling and handwriting. Good luck :)

daffodil
I have a first grader. She's doing Singapore math, Bravewriter style writing, All About Spelling, Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding, and history with living books and the Usborne Encyclopedia or World History. We also do Salsa Spanish and Artistic Pursuits. We used Handwriting without Tears, but we no longer use a separate program for penmanship. Aurelia
This is what I recommend, partially based on what we did that year: English: Writing with Ease 1, SL Readers 1 or 2 - you don't have to buy the books or schedule from Sonlight, but they have good choices for those reading levels. I like the literature and poetry lists from AO Year 1. I wouldn't worry about spelling if you're doing ETC. Otherwise, I recommend WRTR for both spelling and phonics. Handwriting (if needed, WWE includes copywork): Zaner-Bloser Manuscript 1 History: SOTW Ancient Times with AG Science: Sonlight B if you need everything all put together for you. BFSU if you want to organize everything yourself. GEMS is somewhere in the middle, and mostly hands-on. Extras, if you want them: Music: DD loved Discoveries in Music (expensive, but enjoyable) and Kinderbach. Art: Meet the Masters or Atelier
