Sonlight LA

I haven't seen many people mention this program. Has anyone here used it? I tried to search the SL forums, but I didn't get any great info there. We do read the books on their reading list so I thought it might be nice to tie in some LA with that. I did get the sample lesson plan, but it looks like the vocab. portion is only available in the core plan which I do not have or want. I'm also not willing to give up my AAS so we wouldn't do the spelling portion. Would SL be a waste of our time and money?

I have used Sonlight's LA and I really like it. I took a break from it this year to do IEW but I plan on going back to it either next year or the year after. I love the way the kids do a little something every day when it comes to writing (copywork/dictation, mechanics, pre-writing and a writing assignment). I did want a little more grammar so I added in Easy Grammar last year. I like the way the assignments go with what the kids have been reading. It is a little reinforcement that way. As for the vocabulary we just went over words in the books she did not understand. We use Wordly Wise which is what Sonlight schedules as an add on. All of the information comes in the instructors guide now, so you cannot just buy the LA guide any more.

Oh, that’s right. I forgot about that; the LA is now in the Core (updated and improved) starting with Core D and up. We also did a different grammar program in the past when we used SL LA (which was the American History core as well as the Eastern Hemisphere core). I did purchase a core at the beginning of this year which had the integrated LA in it, I also had an older core guide (with the LA) to compare it to, I was very impressed with the improvements. We are no longer using it due to time constraints. But I find it surprising that more people are not talking about how good the LA is now.

Did you like the samples? That’s what I would consider..

I like the idea of it, but it didn't work out here. We needed something that didn't tie reading and writing together since they were at different places with these things. We also needed something with more direct, explicit, incremental instruction, that was more mastery oriented. SL LA is very spiral, so you'll get some of the same concepts each year and eventually master them that way. Some people really love it, it's just a matter of different needs and styles I think.

Merry :-)
