Uff Da!
I feel kind of bad for my kid's teacher right now. DD is a really good, sweet kid and she would probably run for miles on the the trails outside right now if it wasn't so cold out. The poor kid can't sit still. We took her to the mall yesterday and she walked, skipped, galloped all over and still was bouncing off the walls late at night. She is so cute but to ask her to sit and do anything formal with all this energy is comical. And then I think about a whole classroom of kids with cabin fever. :willy_nilly: I really feel for all the teachers out there right now. mom2lydia
Me too, especially since our school has had to have indoor recess for a few weeks now because either it's too cold to be outside or it's been rainy/snowy/muddy/etc to be outside. Indoor recess means no running around just playing in the classroom. My kid has been full of energy too but I make her go outside and play some or do her outside chores(which since it involves taking care of animals means no matter the weather that has to be done). Thank you to the patient teachers who have been putting up with the stir crazy kids this winter.
mom2lydia
Our magic temp is 32 either windchill or actual temp. Sometimes they get blacktop recess but they don't have anything to do then other than walk around the parking lot, no 4 square or jumpropes or anything and they have that when it's ok temps to go outside but the playground itself isn't safe like right now it's warm enough today but teh playground will be solid mud from all the rain and melted snow. Arcadia
I see K-5 schools here that does not have an auditorium/multi-purpose hall. When my neighborhood K-8 school was built, there is a multi-purpose hall because it is for the middle schoolers. The k-8 kids do PE, lunch and recess at the auditorium when it is raining. Is it a budget problem to build a multi-purpose hall for every K-5 school? I mean if bad weather is normal for part of the school year, won't it make sense to have an indoor PE/assembly area? My boys saturday german class is held at a private school. There is an auditorium there which is part of the rectangular school building. It can be used for bad weather days. SKL
My kids have indoor recess sometimes too, but I'm glad to say their school is old-fashioned about letting kids play outside in the winter. My kids need it! They usually go outside 2-3 times per day. I also take them to The Little Gym a few nights a week, and indoor swimming is also an option, because this seems to help them maintain their equilibrium. If we don't go out at all, we play chase around the house (Mama chases kids). Kids gotta move!
windmillmarie
Our K-8 school has PE every day and they've been pretty creative with their activities. They just did roller skating and tumbling is now. Even with that and recess, my 10 year old is bouncing off the walls.
Uff Da!
I realized today that the school planned a good portion of their field trips for end of January through March for a reason. When I looked at the schedule before, I wondered why in the world they wouldn't spread the field trips out evenly through the year. I get it now! kiwik
I understand the overcrowding. It didn't get to using the whole library or gym at ds' school but they did partition off part of the library and use the room off the gym last year. Is there anywhere-cloakroom, teachers' staff-room etc that an aide could take small groups of kids to throughout the day to do star-jumps etc for 10 mins? At our school they do jump jam and action songs throughout the day in the junior classrooms.
