I'll say Hi! I love the Cross-Centered Christianity title. In our various distinctives (and I am not one who thinks distinctives are unimportant) it is vital that we not lose sight of the gospel. I have come to think of Lutherans as our closest 'cousins' in the faith. I am interested to learn more.

Growing up my home church was a ELCA church. We have not attended a church regularly in years though. My beliefs are still very much Lutheran, and I am considering finding a new church to attend. I often feel alone among my Christian homeschool friends, and would enjoy this group! :001_smile:

I will come hang out here. :)

I have a long family history of the Lutheran faith (lots of german turned midwestern ancestors, LOL!) and we currently attend an ELCA church. I've wavered between rather conservative Christianity all the way to a more progressive version over the years. I've found I'm most comfortable somewhere in the middle. ;)

"Cross-centered" is a great description. I think it would be interesting to talk about the Lutheran faith, other mainline denominations, and how it all fits together in Christian culture these days.

I was baptized ELCA, and went to a LCMS school K-8. My DH is Catholic, but we agreed to raise the boys LCMS. A few times I have taken them to mass, and we attend many Catholic services for our extended family. But our home church is Lutheran.

I heard about something new (to me) at church a few Sundays ago. Apparently first communion is not necessarily tied to confirmation at our church anymore. Is that common in the LCMS these days?

Not sure about LCMS, but with the ELCA church I am familiar with, first communion is typically in 5th grade and confirmation is 7th/8th grade.

It's becoming more and more common. The new Agenda for LSB has an early Communion rite in it.

Lent. Is anyone looking forward to Lent and preparing? Do you have any special things you do to mark the time? We will be using Lutherans for Lent (http://steadfastlutherans.org/?p=16835) as our devotional.

Also, here are some links on my blog to things we do during Lent:

Anyone else? :)

I'm looking forward to Lent (but not nearly as much I did Advent!).

We'll put our Alleluia banner away on either the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, or, more likely, the Tuesday before. In its place will go our Jesus Tree...there are daily Bible readings that go along with it, much like a Jesse Tree, but they all focus on the life of Christ. We still need to make a banner for our schoolroom for Lent, and hang it where our Epiphany banner currently is. I have a pattern picked out, but I need to buy more felt...I should probably do that soon! We'll also be reading through Amon's Adventure again (I wish he'd write another Lent book!), as well.

On Holy Saturday, we're going to make a Christ candle for our home, which we'll then use throughout the year, especially as the centerpiece of our Advent wreath. This is a new activity for us this year, and I'm really looking forward to it.

My mother-in-law was having a "Lenten Wreath" made for us that's similar to an Advent Wreath, but is shaped like a crown of thorns, and instead of lighting a candle each week, you take one away. I don't know if it will be done in time...it's being made on a smaller scale to match the one used at the Lutheran school at which she teaches, and the person that makes it is pretty busy!

I think that's it. I'm also looking forward to the midweek Lenten services and suppers at church...I love the extra time of worship and fellowship in the middle of the week!
