EthiopianFood
I'm hoping to coordinate music with history. Any links/recs for ancients?
Pod's mum
Yep, I just posted this on a different thread... This site looks like it has a fair bit that could be complete or dipped into to suppliment another programme. Including good lectures. And all free. http://www.bbc.co.uk.../makingofmusic/ They have a beautiful timeline with heaps of images too.
Candid
As far as I am aware we don't know quite what ancient music sounded like. There are probably groups you can find that play instruments made like ancient instruments (based on pictures and descriptions) but what they actually played, I don't think we know. You'll notice that the BBC timeline doesn't start to Medieval time period (1136 AD) .Even with that music we have less of a sense of what it sounded like because instruments were different. Again, you'll likely find some "reproduction" music being played by groups working with old instruments.
Kalmia
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/25/science/25flute.html?_r=0 Here's the link to the oldest instrument discovered yet. Julie Smith
I like this CD of music about the Epic of Gilgamesh. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/tonygarone
Kalmia
Here's another one that came up with the ancient flute. Supposedly the first written musical composition (from Mesopotamia).

We don't have any "notes" from ancient times, though we do know what kinds of instruments they played and what they must have sounded like. There was no method of recording score in the ancient world.
Julie Smith
I'm hoping to coordinate music with history. Any links/recs for ancients? It's ancient, and a story / music combination. Check out this DVD retelling of Beowulf http://www.bagbybeowulf.com/video/index.html
tearose
You can also look into music from ancient Greece.
I think that so little is known about ancient music that there isn't much to study. Robert Greenberg touches on it for a few minutes in his TTC series "How to listen to great music" series. Maybe also interesting to note that in Latin "carmen" means both poem and song interchangeably.
EthiopianFood
Thanks! I can handle just hearing what the instruments sounded like. I suppose I can't make whole units on that, though! Well, I guess I will reevaluate then. We will just do a year of famous composers, then try again Year 2. :)
