It's my turn. My dad wanted to get me an iPod Touch 5th generation for my birthday next month. I have a 4th generation and don't really see the need for the newer version just yet, but he is open to getting me a 7" tablet instead. So I am going crazy trying to figure out which. I'd like to stay around the $330 price-point (the cheapest iPad). I don't really know exactly how I will want to use it, but hope it can be useful to me in my daily life - homekeeping, school, some reading, etc. What would you get, and why? I have 6 children, ages 11mo - 10yo. They won't be using it for fun, except some fun school would be alright. There seem to be tons of pros and cons to all the options.

After having an iPhone for several years, I just got the iPod Mini and I love it. There was no learning curve, since I already have an iPhone. Plus Manu of the apps work on both. I really, really like reading books on my iPad. I have a kindle touch that I never really liked (I think I wanted to scroll on it like I do on my iPhone - it just never worked foe me), but reading on the iPad mini is perfect.

Since you already have an iPod, just think of the iPad mini as an iPod with a larger screen and the ability to run apps made for iPad and iPod.

Having just gone through this at Christmas I picked the iPad regular size. I absolutely adore it. I do not have one with a data plan. I have an Android phone and could not see a good reason to have what amounted to a bigger Android product. Now I love my iPad so much that I've converted to an Apple girl. I want a Macbook and an iPhone.

There are definately benefits to staying on the same platform so you can share music, books, etc across your devices. I'm personally a fan of the larger screen of the regular iPad because we do quite a bit of PDF curriculum on it and I use it a lot but everyone I know who bought the mini loves it as well.

Also, I know 2 people who purchased and returned the nook hd after Christmas. Friends bought them for their sons no there were several problems with both devices. They ended up with kindle fires instead because they were not willing to pay more than $200. The other friend had charging problems with her Nook so returned it and got an iPad instead. She is very happy with the iPad.

Ipad mini is not worth the money, imho.

I use the Ipad for reading the newspaper and web surfing, and Nexus 7 for reading books and email (also the newspaper and web surfing when on the go because it's smaller than the ipad).

For the money, I recommend the Nexus 7 unless you love Apple apps.

It sure seems split, when I read about it, etc.

A little more info.......

I have not purchased any iPod apps - only used free ones thus far. Nor have I bought anything from iTunes, etc. I do have a google calendar and use google drive, etc, quite a bit, so that makes the Nexus appealing. However, using the 2 platforms sounds confusing to me, possibly. It is nice to stick with what I am familiar with, and could still use those google things on the iPad for the most part. I'm curious about the ability to multitask on the Nexus - can anybody comment on that? I'm not sure if my dad would go for a full-size, he wants me to be able to carry it around, hold it one-handed, etc so I'm currently focusing my efforts on choosing a 7ish inch.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. I just keep going back and forth.
