What is the difference between singapore's NEM and DM and which one is better for a not-so-mathy mom?

Recommended Posts

I decided to go with Singapore 5 a standards and then continue with either NEM or DM. I need something to be more independent and self-teaching. Do I have to teach these like Singapore elementary?

I am ok at math, but terrible right brain explainer who doesn't match my left brainer dc! He prefers to learn from a self teaching book, and some of my friends recommend Saxon, but I don't think we'll like it.

The DM teacher's guides are basically just a solutions manual. They definitely assume that the teacher has a decent grasp on the material. This is one reason I'm not sure how far we'll get in the DM series. DM 7 has been going well and I feel confident enough about the material in DM 8. Beyond that, I may need to switch my DD to a different program.

I agree.

I bought the DM 1A book last fall. I was extremely disappointed in the level of teaching in the book and teacher manual. I have a pretty good grasp of algebra/prealgebra, but ds needed something to do more independently. DM wasn't it for us, and we had used Singapore successfully through 6A. This was not the standards edition.

We've changed program a few times in middle school. Right now we're settled on the older Dolciani books.

Maria Miller of MM recommends the Foerster algebra 1 with the DVD's. There's a veteran HSer on this forum who really likes it as well (I want to say it's 8FilltheHeart but I can't swear to that).

Yes, she usually uses MUS Algebra as prealgebra, then follows up with Foerster for algebra.

Foerster is pretty cheap too. I got the book used for $10, and I think the DVDs from Math Without Borders are in the $50-60 range. I haven't priced a solutions manual (not sure I would need it, as I'd probably just assign the odd questions, which have answers in the back).

Can you buy Foerster Algebra 1 at Rainbow Resource Center? Thank-you very much for the information.
