X-post: Pearson allows homeschoolers to register and view samples on their site!

Recommended Posts

Maybe everyone already knows this, but I'm posting for anyone who is like me and doesn't always catch the latest info.

I had no idea we can register to have an account on the Pearson site....which enables you to view large samples of many of their texts online. :hurray:

Yes, I have found them very homeschool friendly. I have previewed both high school and college level books. I used Miller Levine Biology for ds and will use it next year for dd including the full online access with teacher's book, tests and answer key. I know some people have a hard time with them, but I have found them to be really good to work with as long as you keep all your contact online :). Everyone that has ever posted about calling them has horror stories.

I put teacher and the name of my homeschool. I put in my own zip code. There was one point on one of the Pearson account creation pages (I don't remember which one) where I had to select a school. I used my local high school because it wouldn't let me put one in. Later when I added a feature they offered (they do this now and then), I had to email support and they added my homeschool. Now it comes up in the list of schools for the world to choose from :)

They sent me an email for me to fill out homeschool affidavant. So now have to wait 24-48 hours to get user pin. One weird thing was that they asked you if you are using this to place and track orders or eusage only. I had no idea what to put as I didn't know what eusage only was. So I picked to place and track orders. Crossing fingers I did this right.

No ordering can be done yet as the email states to wait until pin is recieved before ordering.

Okay that is all really weird b/c I put in my zip code and clicked the search button for the list of schools and I was able to select "I homeschool" or something like that. Then on the drop down I was able to select homeschool-teacher. I don't know anything about a pin, but maybe that is b/c I was not ordering. I just wanted to check out a sample and had no problems, did not have to fill out an affidavit or wait for a pin.

Hmmm...I'll have to go look at my account later.

I created my account a couple of years ago and all those options weren't available. I'd have gone with place and track orders too Holly, because that is what I've used Oasis for. I think it is great that they have added a homeschool option too! I had to do a separate registration to preview books. Maybe they've wrapped it all into one now.

Get used to confusing and annoying interfaces... the teacher access is about as bad as anything I've ever seen, but it is worth figuring out in order to get all the online materials.

Ok I got the email back. Now I have to go in and set up my pin number. They give you a temp pin and I got a 3% discount on all order that expires in 30 days. Now I am hoping I can get the access pack when I purchase the book with access pack. crossing fingers. Any tricks before I move forward???

Nope. Ordering the Access Pack was one of the scariest things I've done as a homeschooler. Seeing that price come up :w00t: Then choosing the special condition (I don't remember what this was, but I followed Handmaiden's directions here) to make it free. Then living in fear that something would go wrong or that they would bill me. :svengo:

I know I sound pitiful, but it was so intimidating! I used it the whole year, got access to the iPad version (free) when it was done and now I'm looking forward to using it with #2 next year.

Go for it!
