nukeswife
My daughter would know all of them but caudal, but then again she's a freak who watches documentaries about animals and forensics all the time.
Acadie
My dd knows the word feral because she loves horses. Amy
texasmama
My 4th and 6th graders know only feral from list. They should know pulmonary from their A and P class, but they did not remember it.
Country Mouse
My 11-year-old knows all of those.
Karen in CO
My 8 and 12 yo know all the words except caudal. Sorry - no 5th grader in the house this year. My kids love documentaries, the youngest wants to be a vet, and we saw a pulminologist about 8 times in the ER last year. Asthma is fun. Chrysalis Academy
Yep, only feral here too. Pulmonary was learned last year when studying the human body, but clearly forgotten . . . :glare:
ccolopy
6th grader knows all four, 3rd grader knows pulmonary and feral.

Miss Mousie
I'm guessing DS would have known everything but caudal, but I also suspect that his definition of pulmonary, while at least in the right ballpark, would have been quite vague ("uh ... something to do with breathing and stuff?").
TracyP
4th grader did not know any. And I just learned what caudal means. :leaving:

Crimson Wife
DD gave me the definition for "coddle" rather than "caudal", but knew the rest. I didn't know the meaning of that one either.
Laura Corin
Hobbes (7th) and Calvin (11th) both knew them all except caudal. Hobbes was a bit vague on 'pulmonary' though - he had it as chest rather than lungs. Laura
SunnyDays
My 10 year old knew avian and feral. Now you have to tell us what the, um, discussion was! :D
prairiewindmomma
Mine didn't know caudal. He should, as we did human anatomy & physiology a year ago, but I don't think he could distinguish it from dorsal or ventral or cephalad. historically accurate
pulmonary, avian, caudal, feral.. Trying to settle an argum---....discussion.... ;) 5th grader knew avian and pulmonary, kind of. I got "air/birds/airplane?" for avian, and "pulse...no, wait, lungs!" on pulmonary. Once I explained feral was not pharoah, she knew feral. Had no idea on caudal.
LucyStoner
My 4th grader (9.5) knew avian, pulmonary and feral. Not caudal. Honestly, I had to rack my brain to retrive caudal. He's a spelling bee sort of kid. He can spell them all, even not knowing what caudal meant.
Mnemosyne
I don't have a 5th grader... but I didn't know caudal. I had to look it up. ;)

Halcyon
OP here. Well, the reason I ask is that this week DS10 was learning Latin words pulmo, pulmonis, cauda, caudae, fera, ferae etc and I was surprised he found them so difficult. And then I realized he didn't know that feral meant "wild" and I was suprised. DH was annoyed because he thinks those are words all 5th graders should know, and he attributes the fact that he doesn't know themm to reading too much Nate the Great and not enough Gulliver's Travels. ("When I was a kid, Gulliver's Travels WAS pulp!! And now it's considered literature! He needs to put down those books blah blah") I said he reads those books in his spare time, and is reading books like Wonder (fantastics BTW) also. And DS strengths do NOT lie in vocabulary. Anyway, thanks for answering!
boscopup
I don't even know what caudal means. :tongue_smilie: And you can use the Latin to teach those English words. I asked my son (3rd grade, not 5th), and he didn't know any of the words, even though I have used the word "feral" several times around him. We have a group of feral cats that live in an old, boarded up farm house across the street. I call it the "cat house". :D Apparently, DS wasn't paying attention when I used the word. I don't think I learned the word pulmonary until high school. Not sure when I learned avian and feral. Caudal sounds familiar, but yeah, I need to go look that up. I've heard about cauda equina syndrome, but I don't think I've ever head/used the term caudal. Dmmetler
My DD does, but only knows Caudal because she's obsessed with snakes, and when we were preparing for the body parts section of the ELE and was drawing pictures, needed the Latin for tail (and scales). I suspect she knew the other words because of Latin as well-the ELE is heavy on derivatives.

Dory
All three of my kids knew all the words except caudal. My dd said she didn't remember any of them until I gave her a hint but both my 9 yo and my 5yo ds's knew them without any problems.
Crimson Wife
DD has always been strongest verbally, but I did start her in formal vocab study when I realized in 2nd that vocab was the "limiting factor" in terms of her reading comprehension. She did the two MCT Caesar's English books and is now working her way through Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop. She also learns a lot of words through her spelling bee prep.
