amyrobynne
My 1st grader is going through AAS1, 2, and 3 this year. He does copywork and narration from literature read-alouds. I assign him picture books and easier chapter books to read. He's doing HWT (1st grade) for handwriting. I've been looking at MCT language arts for my upcoming 4th grader. What would be reasonable for my middle son to do in the upcoming year if I then start him with MCT in 3rd grade? Before I talked to someone about MCT today, I'd been thinking about doing Phonetic Zoo level A, WWE 2, and FLL 2 along with giving him literature to read. Crimson Wife
I know a number of people who use either Grammarland or The Sentence Family before MCT's "island", but I would just have your 2nd grader tag along with the 4th grader. "Island" is pretty easy IMHO. Now be forewarned that there is a big jump between "island" and "town", so a student who starts "island" young may not be able to continue straight on the following year to "town". My DS is finishing up "island" this semester and while I'm planning to take him through Grammar Town as soon as he finishes Sentence Island, he won't do the rest of the "town" level until later. FairProspects
I don't think Island is easy, but my yardstick may be off.
Forgiven
I started MCT Island with my 4th grader this year. I wasn't planning on using it with my DS, who's in 2nd grade, until next year, but he saw his sister doing it and wanted to try. So far, he likes it and is doing well. I go slower with him than with my DD (4th), so she's a bit ahead of him, but he's comprehending and understanding. I've heard that Town is a lot harder, so I don't plan on doing Town with him next year, but if he wants to try, I'll let him. We actually just started the Sentence Island book with my DS (his sister has been in it for a while and is almost finished), and he loves it. It's nice to find a curriculum that he enjoys doing and does well at it. I say give it a try if he's interested in starting in 2nd grade. Elfknitter.#
We did Voyages in English (purchased during a HSBC sale), took some down time, read the Ruth Heller and Brian P. Cleary books and then moves into Grammar Island. Had I known of Grammarland then, I might have gone that route with the worksheets.
