What's your favorite source of news these days?

I used to like CNN... but last fall they got rid of their investigative news division entirely (aparently advanced computer graphics and talking heads are cheaper and get higher ratings).

I also used to like ABC (since 5 or 6 years ago when I read that they were the most balanced source of news in the USA... they had the least negative things to say about Bush at the time, and even though I wasn't a big fan, I also don't like political agendas). They don't seem to be very balanced anymore though... recently I have heard more about gun control, the personal life of the Obama family, about medical correlations as if they are science, pushing flu shots, etc than I EVER cared to tolerate. And DH comes home from work having heard brief updates on the radio knowing more than I do about what's going on in the world than I do, and I make an effort to watch the news morning and night!

I prefer a video source to a newspaper, as I can do stuff like fold laundry or start to cook dinner while it's on. Even the radio might be okay, as long as it's balanced. I don't want hating Obama any more than I want to hear how he's the best thing since sliced bread.

I do watch CNN once in a while. It makes me crazy at times though. The blah blah blah is irritating.

Most of my news comes from the radio. I listen to NPR and the BBC. I am sure NPR has it's bias, but it is a better news source (in my opinion) than anything on nightly television. I have satellite radio in the car, so I switch around between a few news channels. If NPR is being boring, I switch to BBC. If neither of those give satisfaction, there are a few other news channels clustered together on Sirius radio. I've been thinking about dropping my subscription at the end of the years (which ends in the summer for me) but I am not sure I will be happy with other news sources. There is probably good online news, but I end up getting distracted and coming here, lol. In the car, I have nothing to do but listen.

For those of you who rely on BBC, do you have a TV station, or do you use their website? We only get BBC America, and they seem to air only drama and reality shows, no news. (I think there might be an early morning news program, but I guess I should record it, as I'm not getting up at 4am to watch.)

I get most of my news from my dh. He'll say: did you hear about such and such? And I'll say, no. And then he tells me. LOL.

I used to be much more of a news junkie but I guess I'm getting old and cynical. I just don't wanna know about much any more.

But my computer opens up to The Washington Post so I do read headlines there. That's my liberal source. Then I subscribed to a newsletter called Catholic Pulse which reports on church, national and world news. That's my more conservative source. Sometimes I listen to the news on a local all news station when I'm driving around in the car, if something is going on I want to hear about. And every Saturday morning I go get bagels and have to stand in line. The bagel shop has a big screen TV and it is always blaring CNN. Mostly it seems to be Dr. Sanjay Gupta reporting from somewhere.

BBC news, both on TV and Internet, which seems the highest quality available anywhere, best as I can tell. CNN newscasters on TV are so blabbery and juvenile. On my cell phone, I check in with the apps for Washington Post, Time, and USA Today. I avoid FOX News like the plague. Nothing there but insufferable, nonstop insults of each other and of subjects in the news. I often appreciate the writing quality of the New York Times; however, they changed the website to fee-based, unless I limit my reading to a few articles per month. NPR broadcasts can be quite interesting. When I used to travel on business, I loved to pick up copies of The Economist magazine for the news.

Neither. BBC World Service on satellite radio

Online CNN and Fox News (which I despise but I look at it anyway). Then if there is anything I think is worth investigating further, I search from there. Online I can scan the headlines and then pick and choose. Can't watch on TV because you're kind of at the mercy of whatever they are throwing at you.

I agree with Susan that there are no unbiased sources. Looking at a left and a right source and then researching further seems the best choice for now. It's frustrating. I was also disgusted that CNN eliminated their "real" news division. News is just becoming entertainment, but what's worse is that nobody cares.

Another vote for NPR and the BBC here. And i was fascinated to read aboout Dane and her Sirius radio. I love mine because I love flipping back and forth between different NPR shows when one gets boring.

I have been thinking of getting a "print" newspaper for daily delivery to my ipad. NPR did a story about the Algerian hostage situation today and I realized how woefully ignorant I was about the subject. Washington Post or New York Times?

We don't watch TV so my news comes from the radio or the internet. Not having 24 hour news in my house is a deliberate decision to maintain some calm.

I try to catch Radio Netherlands.

Wow! I forgot about shortwave radio. Reminds me of years ago, when that compound outside of Waco, TX was raided by the authorities. My brother-in-law (who lives in Waco) was listening to shortwave radio broadcasts from Greece (in Greek) -- and that is how he first learned of the events!

I have not found a single news source that does not have an agenda. I read from many sources and try to put them together to get the whole story.

:iagree: I have a few online news sources that I visit daily, but they all have an agenda. I can't stand watching the news on TV anymore - on any station. Everything is so sensationalized. Whether the agenda leans left or right, it's so laughable that I just can't take it seriously anymore. I know there are still some real journalists out there that are actually trying to report objectively, but they seem to be few and far between these days.

No cable here, so on-line and radio.

I don't really trust NPR all that much, but it is probably because I got tired of their very skewed reporting on all things Roman Catholic. I just heard one too many report (on a subject I actually kept up with) that was so superficial and biased I just stopped respecting their news reporting capabilities. Mostly it was their opinion or "in depth" analysis that turned me off where they would treat dissidents as speaking for the church. They'd pull out the same celebrity outsiders and pretend they were conducting an intelligent objective report. I haven't really listened to NPR for years now as a result.

I was being totally smarta$$ed. I tend to be the one that everyone hates because I reply with snopes links. You would think they would start learning to research things before posting.

I knew you were! LOL Smarta$$es unite!!! I'm the snopes lady too. I have to admit I am a grammar nazi sometimes too.

I have quite a few friends who are in the "If I saw it on FB, it must be true" crowd.

NPR. It's the only place I hear actual experts talking about things. Heck, if i only listened to the Diane Rehm show on fridays (Friday news roundup) I'd be pretty informed. And she always has one one person for the round up that I totally disagree with, so that means it must be giving multiple sides to the story, lol. Love "The World" which is a coproduction by BBC and Public Radio International...it is international news and really well done. I listen to morning edition most days, but yes, gun control is a bit too heavy a topic but I think that is anywhere right now. Oh, and do try Marketplace...it is on in the evening and is an excellent source of financial news. I knew VERY little about finance before I started listening and they make things clear enough for anyone to follow, and actually interesting. Their explanantion of the housing collapse was probably the best news piece I ever heard.

Another BBC and NPRer here.

Jumping on the NPR and BBC bandwagon. We also subscribe to The Economist. Very occasionally I read the Financial Times.

Regentrude, I used to love reading Der Spiegel; but, alas, my German skills have sadly declined over the past decade or so.

ETA: Laura, I really liked listening to Radio 4 when I was in Britain. I wish BBC would broadcast it worldwide.

This is all we relied on (shortwave) when I was growing up in Africa. We had limited electricity and had a wind up radio that I think also took batteries, although I could be getting 2 different radios mixed up.

We only got a few stations, BBC was one of them.

We don't have satellite or cable, so no all news channel for us. These days I prefer to get world and national news online. NBC (formerly MSNBC), BBC, and NPR are the ones I read regularly. I like to listen to NPR in the car (the only time I really listen to radio is in the car). I also periodically check out our local news channel websites (I go to several of them, not just the one I usually watch on tv).

The only tv news I watch is local news.

Thanks everyone. I set my DVR to record the couple different BBC news programs (there's a world news early in the morning, an american edition in the evening). Only having watched the first 20 minutes I'm already thrilled with it - I had no idea about at least three of the stories I've heard so far!

I also downloaded the NPR app to my iPhone- I love that it comes with a playlist, so I can select the stories I want to hear and just walk around listening to them when cleaning, etc. The problem with listening to NPR on the radio has always been that they seem to either switch to some obscure music or jazz program every time I feel like listening to the news or be focusing on some fluffy human interest story I have no interest in. We don't have satellite radio anymore (got irritated with adding commercials, as well as not liking some more adult oriented content that a child kept turning to). This phone playlist is great!

I downloaded some other apps too (Drugde report, half a dozen others), though I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Thank you so much! I already feel much more informed than yesterday, with much less effort on my part.

Guest inoubliable

BBC and Al Jazeera. If something really interests me, I try to look at lots of different stories from different countries to get a pretty solid view of what's happening.

Exactly that for us. Never on the TV, that's for sure.
