We are in TT Pre-Algebra. My daughter struggles so much with math. She is in 8th right now.In pre-algebra. I am extremely bad in math myself. What is better for a struggling student. MUS or TT? We need a DVD program. I have already checked out Khan, BJU is way to hard. As well as chalkdust. I really need a math program for Algebra that is going to have clear explanations, and goes at a slow pace, but also reviews. I am not sure how TT is with Algebra.? Cannot find a tutor, and cannot afford an online class at $350.00. (husband is very slow at work). Ideas? ETA: Someone did mention that there is a person on this board who does online classes, but know nothing about it. Wondering the price, if it is a set time etc....

I'm not great at math either, and dd wants to be an engineer. Tutor.com has been a Godsend for us. They charge a monthly fee ($35?) and you get 60 minutes of one on one tutoring online with a tutor. They have a whiteboard that you can see them writing on, and your student and the tutor type a conversation back and forth. It's been wonderful for us- when my dd knows what she's doing in math, the leftover monthly minutes get rolled over to the next month, so thats good too. I know they used to offer a free trial- maybe they still do?

p.s. my daughter used to be a figure skater too! =)

I don't think one is easier than the other, however they teach quite differently. If TT isn't making sense MUS might. If you can't help her though, a tutor is a very good idea. MUS does include online support. She can have their reps talk her through any problems. You might also consider an online class with a live teacher so she can ask questions. MUS offers those, but so does Jan in TX, Potter's school, and plenty of others.

I believe TT has a sample of each of its books online. If MUS does too, how about looking at both and seeing which style appeals to you. I know my preference is TT, but it might not be yours...

I saw a Demo of Algebra 1 on youtube for MUS. I have to say that even *I* understand it. (And I do not get math at all) . I am someone who needs to *see* it. Like my daughter does. I am going to show her that video and see what she thinks. And I already have the blocks so the program is not that expensive. If anyone else would like to chime in on MUS, please do.

My ds who struggles with math is finishing MUS Geometry this week and will begin Algebra 2 next week. It has always been a great fit for him. Steve explains in a way he completely gets and even enjoys a little.

My dd hated listening to Steve. She complained he only told her why and not how to do math. She used MUS through the beginning of Algebra with me teaching instead of Steve. Then I moved her to Lial's for more challenge. The only problem has been the lack of review in Lials. We miss having a day to learn new material, then a couple of days to review old and new before each test. MUS moves slowly, but the retention has been great for both my kids. I know that isn't everyone's experience, but it is ours.

I have one ds that prefers MUS and one that prefers TT. They are both great, but teach math a bit differently. It really depends on your dc. You really can't go wrong either way - use whichever is the best fit for your dd.

I had my daughter watch the youtube video, and the sample video from the website. She was so excited. She jumped up and yelled "I understand it!!! I got it!!!" So, looks like that is going to be a winner.
