I'm getting weird calls - someone tell me what this is about

For over a week I've been getting calls on my cell phone from a restricted number. When I answer the phone, I hear music playing or the call hangs up. I got tired of it tonight and called the cell phone company to find out who it is. They can't tell me since it is a restricted number. They did say they would block further calls. Is this some new telemarketing thing?

I discovered that if you google a phone number you will find there are numerous websites where people report suspicious calls and numbers. I had a couple weird ones and it made me feel better to see that lots of people were getting calls from that number and some people had some information about who was calling.

I can't see a number or return the call. It just says restricted. The phone company couldn't look it up either. Were the calls you could see telemarketers or scammers?

Could be a robo call or regular sales call that puts you on hold (music) before the person or sale has a chance to kick in.

It sounds like hold music. I thought of robo calls and actually hoped that that was what it was. It was the only thing that made sense. At first I thought it was a business trying to get ahold of me, but I got several evening calls and one over the weekend.

Did they actually ever leave a message or stop calling?

They don't. They're either fishing or telemarketers. I've been getting calls from Rachel on the cellphone too. I used to just block those numbers, but they're rarely the same ones. Easier just to send them to voicemail. I use Google Voice, which emails a transcript if the caller does leave a message.

I had that happen once, except the number wasn't blocked. It turned out that it was a collection agency, and they have operators that apparently never answer (I even tried waiting one time, just for grins - never answered). I googled the number and found out what it was, and soon thereafter, we received a letter in the mail about an unpaid hospital bill from several years ago (it was past the statute of limitations for hospital bills in my state, and we'd never been billed for this item by the actual doctor). My DH had to send a letter to get them off our back. Then the calls stopped.

That's really annoying that there is no number for you though!

I'd be a little wary with these calls coming at night and on weekends. It could just be kids playing around, but a year (maybe two) ago our news ran a segment showing how some thieves did this. If there was an answer, they'd hang up knowing someone was home. If there wasn't, they'd continue checking out the house to rob it. It was just a local thing, but I imagine the same idea can be used in more than one place. The difference between them and telemarkers is that they had the call restricted (could not see the number) and there was never anyone else on the line.

My boyfriend had a missed call, I googled the number and the results seemed to be a robo call. But when I clicked on images, the very first result was a local trans escort that I personally know. And when I called the number it played weird elevator/cheap hold music for 5 minutes straight until I hung up. I think it's some kind of twilio voip number or whatever.

I saw my avatar just now but had no idea what this thread was about. I'm a little surprised I called the phone company. I get a lot of spam calls now, but more to the point I don't like calling businesses to ask questions. I must have been pretty weirded out.
