Embassy
We started with Alif Baa and Arabian Sinbad. We will be moving to the Arabic for Life textbook soon.
roanna
I'm not sure what age group you are looking for but CNN and BBC radio are helpful for listening/ reading. I also found this on amazon...there are also audio CDs. The books look nice, clean and understandable http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Arabic-Activity-Book-Beginners/dp/0781812690/ref=sr_1_10?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1358783889&sr=1-10&keywords=Arabic
EmmaNZ
Is this the book you mean? I'm interested to know why you chose this one. I have been trying to teach my kids arabic also, but we haven't had much success. We have tried Gateway to Arabic and Madinah Arabic, but neither excited me much - hence the fizzling out! To the OP - you could have a look at these also.

Embassy
I'm using Alif Baa 2nd edition right now. Once we finish we will go on to Arabic for Life. It has great reviews and appears to be a source good for self-teaching. Alif Baa has really helped train our ears for the different sounds. We may be going to a Saturday school soon. We met with the teacher and our pronunciation isn't off :) Arabian Sinbad is a DVD set and a CD-ROM game that we use for extra practice. It has helped build vocabulary - something that Alif Baa does not do. I also purchased Introduction to Standard Spoken Arabic: A Conversational Course on DVD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0300144806/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02, but I think it will be best to wait until we are done with Alif Baa to use it since we need to be able to read the conversations in Arabic. Which Arabian Sinbad books you used? Arabic for Life textbook : http://www.amazon.co...g/dp/0300141319 Thanks for your time..... Yes, those are the books. Arabic for Life starts with the letters and sounds, but it goes much further. I think the book is equal to 2 years of high school Arabic. I think Alif Baa does a great job training the ears and helping you step by step learn how to hear the sounds, read them, and write them. It helps me understand to be able to instruct my kids better. I just adapt them for younger kids. I think many of the Arabic curricula designed for kids work best when you speak fluent Arabic. Arabian Sinbad is great because it is immersion.

ccolopy
How old are your kids? DS has been taking online Arabic classes from Johns Hopkins. He started out with Alif Baa and has moved on to Ahlan Wa Sahlan: Functional Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners. The classes for younger students (grades 2-6) use Mastering Arabic 1.
