Giraffe Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Ahhhhh, the smell, the books, the technology! Children's books, in their own section, with little tables for them to sit at! An electronic card catalog and books available that are on my "want to read" list! A friendly librarian to renew my expired card, and my requested items are working their way through the system! They've even installed Overdrive since I was last there! And it was all free!! I'm so happy I did a happy dance in the middle of the library! (I've been out of the country for almost 9 months in a country without a library.) Those of you who have libraries available to you all the time, thank your stars. It's such a joy to be able to go to one. Quote
Dandelion Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Welcome back to Library Land! :) I love my local library. It's one of my happy places. Quote
Giraffe Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 It's one of my happy places too. One of the things that I miss about the US. Quote
twoxcell Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I think it has been about 2 years since I went into our local library and it is like 5 minutes from my house. Quote
Maela Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I am also a library lover. It's an amazing place! :-) Quote
PachiSusan Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I can't wait to check out the two local libraries here!! I adore the library and most especially the children's section!!!! Quote
Cinder Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Those of you who have libraries available to you all the time, thank your stars. It's such a joy to be able to go to one. :iagree: I am thankful. Even as a kid I went to the library regularly. And since we started homeschooling we usually go every week. My dd has been a bit twitchy as we missed our library trip two weeks in a row. But we went yesterday and she's all better now. Quote
Giraffe Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 My DD (who is only five) ran to the kids section to find "her" books. And she was four when we left the US. She checks out books from her school library overseas and loves it, but I can't read them to her like I can here (I'm not fluent in that language). We've already gotten several chapters into one of her books. I know librarians can be difficult and library policies can be arcane, but to simply have one is such a joy! Quote
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Funny how libraries can be so different. The one we went to in Louisiana was usable but it had problems. The one we are using in Iowa is AWESOME. It is in a city that is ranked in the top 10 literary cities and it shows. Welcome back to the land of books. Quote
Durriyyah Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Libraries really are a blessing. That, and neighborhood parks. :) Quote
Parrothead Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I do wish we had a good library. Sadly our local library's children' section is geared toward the crappy public school. It is full of fluff. The adult section is sadly lacking also When we were very rural we had library by mail and it was wonderful. Gosh, I miss a good library. Quote
Luckymama Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Have a great time gorging yourself on libraryness! Our library system rocks too :) Quote
