Mrs Mungo
My dh does veggies and stuff on the grill with the meat. We have various grill gadgets to help with that. Fire Wire Flexible Skewers: http://www.firewiregrilling.com A grill basket for sliced zucchini or tiny potatoes: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/brushed-stainless-steel-grill-basket/s200339 Something like this for peppers: http://www.blisstree.com/2009/06/29/sex-relationships/jalapeno-pepper-roaster/ Add a bag of salad and we're usually good. Dandelion
LOL  Why not just go with his version of a meal? Put a nice big chunk of meat in front of everyone, let your DH bask in the glow of having made dinner, and chow down. :p (Just kidding - I'd need something else to go with it too)
Kathryn
Um, mine thinks meat is a meal. He will seriously make bacon, sausage, and eggs and call it dinner.
thescrappyhomeschooler
Mine would also be happy to eat a giant plate of grilled meat and call that dinner. And dessert.
athena1277
Must be a guy thing! My dh is the same way. He will decide to make fried chicken - and that's all. Or sausage - and that's all. If he's making just enough for his lunch on the weekend, that's all he makes. If he's cooking for all of us, I have to fix a side.
kfeusse
yea...it's just so funny...I will make some sort of comment about needing to figure out what we are doing for supper and he will respond..."what do yo have to worry about, I'm grilling"....and once in a while it will include potatoes...but guess who has to fix them up...cut them, season them, etc...not my hubby. I just have to shake my head and roll my eyes. HOWEVER, the links above would make great father's day gifts or something. thanks.

Exactly! When DH grills, he almost always grills the sides too. You need some gadgets, OP. :D
Excelsior! Academy
I hear you! Dh likes to grill shish k bobs but needs them preskewered. He also likes rice to the side. He starts grilling then runs in to ask for something to put the cooked skewers in, utensils to grill with, etc. Grilling is more work for me. It is great for the kids to play outside with him watching them so its a great trade off!

Lara in Colo
Sort of the same way DH thinks he did all the work for camping, when I did all the shopping, pre-prep, cleaning and organizing. He showed up, loaded the car and helped set up the tent. Oh, I also put away all the camping gear when we get back.
Flowing Brook
Probably for the same reason a certain man in my life will tell me he is going to wash all the dishes for me then leaves me with a sink and counter full of dishes that have been washed but not rinsed! Soap all over the place.

It is great for the kids to play outside with him watching them so its a great trade off! Go take a bath when he starts the grill. Lock yourself in. Turn on music. OR sing, "there's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza..." Sort of the same way DH thinks he did all the work for camping, when I did all the shopping, pre-prep, cleaning and organizing. He showed up, loaded the car and helped set up the tent. Oh, I also put away all the camping gear when we get back. Yeah, we encountered this a long, long time ago. One time dh said, "if you'll get the kids ready, then I'll pack the car." I thought, "great, that's a deal!" He packed *one beach chair, one towel and one bottle of water.* I pointed out he needed sunscreen, towels for everyone, beach toys, our beach blankets a chair for me, etc. He has learned a lot since then. He is quite helpful now, but it takes some teaching.

Laurel
When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion: Routine... (1) The woman buys the food. (2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. (3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand. Here comes the important part: (4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. More routine.... (5) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery. (6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation. Important again: (7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. More routine.... (8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table. (9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all: (10) Everyone PRAISES and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts. (11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed 'her night off.' And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women....

Garga
If he said he was cooking dinner and that's all he cooked, then I'd just go with it. Later, I'd eat a snack, because I'm not a big meat eater. Let him get the full credit.

Laura Corin
Husband started off with this attitude. It was just what he'd grown up with - when the men were grilling the women produced the rest of the meal. He cooks other meals completely by himself, so this was just an historical quirk. I made it clear to him that I really valued his taking over the cooking (he knows that I actually don't like cooking, but for household logistical reasons I end up doing most of it) but that putting in baked potatoes and making a salad could be done by him without interfering with the split second grill timing. He now asks very meekly if something doesn't work out and he needs help on barbecue days. Laura
jillian
My hubby does everything, but he will cook inside too lol. He loves to do it. My only complaint is he uses every possible dish, fork, knife, bowl, tongs, spatula, etc.

Lady Florida.
I'm lucky. Mine recognizes that he's only handling the main dish, and that cooking out for us is a team effort. On my end, I always try to make the sides really, really, simple so he ends up having the bigger load. :) He also usually cleans the kitchen, especially his messy grilling tools.
