AsgardCA Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I'd been looking to get the UILEWH, but now I'm wondering if it would be better to get each area separately. Like the Usborne Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece. They each have 128 pages devoted to their country, whereas the World History is 416 pages, divided into so many different areas. Does anyone know how they compare? Are there other books for Rome and everywhere else covered in World History? I was hoping to get books to cover everything and have them be decently in depth enough for use again next time we cycle around, so I don't have to buy too much more. Quote
AsgardCA Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Has anyone tried these? I've got to buy my books! :) Quote
pitterpatter Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I don't know whether I would break them down that far. We are using Usborne Encyclopedia of the Ancient World this year instead of World History. It is exactly like the ancients section of World History. I just didn't want to cart around World History, plus in whole World History looks quite daunting. I also bought an older and less expensive edition, as they are all the same, as far as I can tell. I've looked at a couple of different copies at the library. I haven't looked at anything specific to ancient Egypt or Greece, but I would think you would miss all of the small civilizations, if you used only those. And, there are a lot of small civilizations. Thank you! I completely forgot about the Ancient World. I was worried about missing all the smaller civilizations, and that's why I was hoping there was more books in the other series, but this is even better. I'll go look at that one, thanks :) Quote
Wabi Sabi Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I have the large, hardcover book but have found that it's a bit unwieldy for my kids. It's big, heavy, and not particularly portable. I recently ordered cheap used paperback copies ($4 each including shipping on Amazon) of Prehistoric World and Ancient World. They're smaller, easier for a child to hold in their lap or tuck into a backpack. I've found that my kids are spending much more time looking at them than the larger book (which now just remains on the bookshelf most of the time.) From what I can tell UILEWH is simply all of these smaller books combined together into one larger volume, but otherwise they're identical. Quote
